Edith T. Van Allen

CANTON -
Edith T. Van Allen, 81, passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 21, 2025. She was the loving wife of the late William Van Allen for 16 years. Born December 5, 1944 in New Rochelle, NY; she was the daughter of the late Frederick and Margaret (Denton) Tubman. Edie and Bill were residents of Barkhamsted and raised their sons, Derek and Warren Van Allen there.
After graduating from Pleasantville High School in 1962, Edie attended Green Mountain College in Vermont. She then began work at Lockheed Electronics where she met her husband, William Van Allen. When they moved to Connecticut, Edie worked as an Administrative Assistant at the Hartford Insurance Company until her retirement. In retirement, she found enjoyment volunteering at the FAVARH Thrift Shop in Canton.
Edie enjoyed taking long walks with friends and her dog. She could be found doing the daily crossword, reading, watching Jeopardy and working on jigsaw puzzles. Later in life her grandchildren became her passion and she enjoyed every minute with them. She loved being on the sidelines of sports, picking them up from school, and supporting them at their activities. She and Bill were extremely active in helping build the Barkhamsted baseball fields. They were very proud of that time in their lives and enjoyed the time spent with the community.
She is survived by her beloved sons, Derek Van Allen and wife Tammy of North Granby, and Warren Van Allen and wife Erin of Ridgecrest, CA; cherished grandchildren, Andrew, Nathan, Graham, Megan, and Chase; a brother, Harry Tubman and wife Ticia of Pleasant Valley; and nephews Erik and William Tubman.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by her younger brother, Kenneth Tubman.
Friends may call on Friday, January 16th from 4-6 PM at Montano-Shea Funeral Home, 5 Steele Road, New Hartford. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 17th at 11AM at the Pleasant Valley United Methodist Church, 93 River Road, Barkhamsted. Reception at the church hall will follow.
