Edward N. Austen, born in Ithaca NY on January 24th 1930, passed away peacefully at home on January 29th 2026. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. Edward leaves behind a legacy marked by kindness, service, and significant contributions to his profession and local organizations.
Edward proudly served his country in the U.S. Army in Germany during the Korean conflict.This experience shaped his unwavering dedication to service. Edward spent 25 years of his career with Cayuga Electric, and was the owner of Fingerlakes Electric Supply Company for an impressive 38 years. His commitment to excellence in his work and leadership paved the way for many in his field.
Throught his life, Edward's community involvement extended far beyond his professional and military endeavors. He was a cherished and longstanding member of the Sertoma Club for 60 Years, where he served a term as District Governor, making impactful contributions to it's mission. His civic services included a 21 year tenure as a member of the Tompkins County Zoning Board of Appeals. He also held the distinction of being the oldest and longest member of The First Congregational Church, reflecting his deep-rooted commitment to faith and his community.
Edward is survived by his loving wife of 73 years, Gayleen Shockey Austen, who stood by his side throughout their multiple adventures together. He is also survived by his children: Debra Bain, Diane Austen, and Steven (Patty Shanahan) Austen; his sister, Elsie-Mary Luranc; and a proud lineage of 6 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews, all of whom will carry on his memory and values.
He was predeceased by his mother Florence Jenks Austen Marshall, and father Thomas Austen; stepfather Russell Marshell; his brothers Robert Austen and Thomas Austen; his Grandson Timothy Bain; and great granddaughter Kaylee Bain, who are fondly remembered in the hearts of those who knew them.
A memorial service to honor Edwards life will be held at The First Congregational Church, located at 309 Highland Rd. Ithaca NY 14850, on February 6th 2026 at 3pm. Edward N. Austen was a remarkable man whose impact on his family and community will not be forgotten. He lived a life full of love, service and devotion, and he will be deeply missed by all who were fortunate enough to know him.
