Edward Bates Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Craig Funeral Home on Feb. 27, 2026.
Edward Charles Bates III, age 78, passed away unexpectedly on February 25, 2026, in St. Augustine, Florida. He was born on September 21, 1947, in Orlando, Florida.

Ed loved playing anything that involved a ball, a bat and/or racket. He was an exceptional athlete. He would never be found in water under 90 degrees regardless of the outside air temperature, but could often be found in tattered shorts and a worn out t-shirt working in the yard. He was never one to sit still for very long. He was an avid tennis player, not only playing himself, but coordinating matches for just about everyone in the club.

Ed held a Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry and a Master's Degree in Environmental Engineering, both from the University of Florida A very intelligent individual, he had a vast knowledge of history and politics.

Born and raised in Florida, he carried his love for his home state throughout his life, eventually settling down in St. Augustine, where he lived until his death.

Ed is survived by his wife of 55 years, Harriet. Together they built a family that was one of Ed's proudest accomplishments. He is also survived by his two sons, Jason (Nickie) of Naples, Florida and Kevin (Joanne) of Kennesaw, Georgia, a granddaughter, Jessie, and three grandsons, Jake, Charlie and Harrison. Ed is further survived by his brother Robert (Martha) Bates and two sisters, Gloria (Ken) Faust and Bonnie Bates.

Ed was preceded in death by his dad, Edward Bates Jr., and his mother, Gloria Watts.

Ed will be remembered for his unwavering love for his family and the example he set through hard work and integrity. His legacy lives on in the lives of his children and grandchildren and in the many memories shared by those who loved him. He will truly be missed by all that knew him.

A private family service will be held to honor his life. A farewell party is scheduled for April 4 at the Atlantic Beach & Tennis Club. Time to be determined. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the Tunnels to Towers Foundation of Staten Island, NY.
