Edward J. "Ed" Day

Edward J. Day, 84, a long-time resident of Chepachet, passed away on December 4th in the Hope Health Hulitar Hospice Center, Providence. He was the husband of the late Dr. Margaret "Peg" (DiBiasio) Day.
Born in Providence, he was the son of the late Walter and Adeline (Young) Day and raised by the late Thomas and Susan Kennedy. He was a graduate of St. Teresa's School and LaSalle Academy. He received a Bachelor's degree in Secondary Education from RIC, a Masters degree in History from UCONN, and a CAGS in Secondary Administration from RIC.
In 1962 he was appointed to a teaching position at North Providence High School where he worked for 30 years as both a teacher and an administrator. Ed was a long time officer in the North Providence Federation of Teacher's Union and served as its President for several years before accepting the position of Housemaster at the high school. He left North Providence High School in 1990 to accept an Assistant Principal position in the Cranston School Department, retiring in 1996 with his wife Peg, who was also a Cranston principal.
Ed and his wife Peg were world travelers, and had spent most of their retirement years driving all over the US, Canada and Mexico in their motorhome. They also planned and escorted groups of teachers to countries all over Europe. Ed and Peg drove across the US 22 times and visited 69 countries on 6 continents.
Ed was a life-long activist in the Democratic Party, and he ran for office several times in Glocester, serving two terms as Town Treasurer. He was President of the Young Democrats in 1960 and had worked on President John F. Kennedy and Senator Clayborn Pell's campaigns.
He is survived by his three daughters, Kerstin Lochrie, Lauren Day and Jennifer Sweeney and their spouses Peter Lochrie, Mitchell Schneir and Michael Sweeney. He was the grandfather of Samantha, Jacob, and Tucker Lochrie, Isabella Schneir and Connor and Mackenzie Sweeney.
His funeral will be held on Thursday December 7th, 2023 at 9:30am from the Anderson-Winfield Funeral Home, Route 44 at Greenville Common, Greenville. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10am in St. Philip Church, 622 Putnam Pike, Smithfield. Visitation Thursday morning 8:30am to 9:30am. Burial will follow in St. Ann's Cemetery, Cranston. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Edward and Margaret Day Scholarship Fund at RI College or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. www.stjude.org
