Edward Wayne Dupree Sr., affectionately known by family as "Papa," passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on July 15, 2025, in
Ayden, NC, at the age of 79. Born January 30, 1946, in Farmville, NC, Wayne lived a life marked by service, devotion to family, and unwavering kindness.
A funeral service and visitation to honor Wayne's life and legacy will be held at Bethany Free Will Baptist Church. Visitation will be held Saturday July 19, 2025 at 10am, and other times at the home of Tracy Weber, 522 Workhorse Lane, Ayden. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 AM, with graveside services following at Evergreen Memorial Estates in Grifton. The family, friends, and members of the community are invited to gather, share memories, and celebrate the remarkable life of a man who cared deeply for others.
Wayne was the cherished husband of Shelby Jean Dupree, with whom he shared many years of love and partnership. Together, they built a strong and nurturing family that was the center of his world. He is survived by his beloved wife, Shelby Jean Dupree; his son, Edward Wayne Dupree Jr.; and his loving daughter, Tracy Lynn Weber (Kevin). "Papa" also leaves behind the joy of his life: his grandchildren Candace Dupree (Benji), Brittany Dennis (Deric), Justin Weber (Amber), Selena Turner (Trey), Austin Weber (Abby), Wayne Dupree, Johnnie Dupree, and Daniel Montoya and great-grandchildren, Andrew Baughman, Kaitlyn Baughman, Haleigh Baughman, Hayden Dennis, Tristan Dennis, Sofia Turner, and June Weber whose laughter and baseball/softball games, dance recitals, and church activities filled his days with pride and happiness. His enduring legacy continues through his sisters Shelby Jean Griffin and Bonnie Benton and his brother Johnnie Dupree. Wayne was proceeded in death by his parents, Lucy and Seth Dupree, and by his sisters Carol Cannon and Ann Stox Suggs.
Wayne proudly served his country in the US Navy for six years, sailing aboard the USS Randolph and the USS America. His dedication to service extended deeply into his community. For 29 years, he was a steadfast volunteer firefighter for the Town of Grifton, NC, responding to calls with courage and compassion. As a passionate member and deacon at Bethany Free Will Baptist Church, Wayne was a source of faith and support for many, guiding others with humility and integrity.
Known for his loving and caring nature, Wayne was the heart of his family: the dependable husband, the doting father, and the adored "Papa." He will be fondly remembered for his boundless pride in his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Edward Wayne Dupree Sr.'s life was defined by service, faith, and love. Though he is gone, his gentle spirit and the example he set will continue to inspire all who knew him.
