Edward Grainger, 77, of Massachusetts, passed away on Wednesday, October 30, 2024 after a long illness. He was the loving husband of Geraldine Julia (Rogers) Grainger. Born in Boston, Massachusetts on May 23, 1947, he was the son of the late Richard E. and Josephine A. (McGrath) Grainger.
Ed was passionate about 18th century American history and architecture, a passion which became his career: locating, identifying and preserving antique building materials. He traveled up and down the east coast from Maine to Pennsylvania searching for barns, taverns, houses, churches and other structures that would provide the materials for new iterations of buildings, breathing a second life into discarded or forgotten stone, wood, bricks and timber. A local newspaper once dubbed him "puzzle-maker" due to his skill in carefully dismantling and then selling and rebuilding structures in different locations. Ed loved to tell stories of travel and adventure from his younger days, had a penchant for sweets and chocolate, and was a veteran of the Vietnam War.
He is survived by his wife Gerri, his children, Carolynn R. Grainger (spouse Michael A. Williams), Jefferson H. Grainger; siblings Richard T. Grainger, Thomas R. Grainger, and JoAnn C. Grainger.
Services will be held at Grace Gospel Church in Somerset, Massachusetts at 11am on January 11, 2025.
