Edward Kay, Jr. Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Anthony Funeral & Cremation Chapels - Brighton/Rochester Chapel on Jul. 26, 2025.

Publish in a newspaper

With heavy hearts, the family of Edward William Kay, Jr. announces his passing on July 23rd, 2025, at the age of 69. He lived every day until the last with joy, generosity, faith, and an indefatigable sense of fun. He is predeceased by his mother, Mary Margaret (Marge) Kay and his father Edward William Kay, Sr. He is survived by his beloved wife of 41 years, Kimberly Kennedy Kay; their four sons, Edward William Kay III (Jenna), Andrew Kennedy Kay (Emily), Timothy James Kay (Elizabeth), and Jeffrey Allan Kay; their six adoring grandsons (with another on the way) and one beautiful granddaughter.

Edward "Ed" Kay was a Certified Public Accountant who spent his 33-year career with PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP (PwC), retiring as Managing Partner for the Rochester office in 2012 after holding positions with PwC in Pittsburgh, London, Tampa, New York City, and Dallas. A calm and respectful presence in the workplace, Ed earned a B.S. in Accounting from Duke University and an M.B.A. in Finance from Northwestern University. Since his retirement, he has been an active board member for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Rochester, St. Bernard's School of Theology, Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Vuzix Corporation, Palmer Foods, Laxxon Medical, and the Greater Rochester YMCA.

A lifelong lover of golf, Ed gratefully volunteered his time and experience, notably serving as the Oak Hill Country Club President from 2010 to 2012 and as the Treasurer for the 2013 PGA Championship at Oak Hill. For Ed, golf was not just a beloved game but a way to build and sustain the personal relationships he so valued. He eagerly awaited his annual golf trips with family and friends from every chapter of his life.

For his many accomplishments, it was clear that Ed's greatest source of joy was always his family. Ed openly adored his wife, Kim, and never missed an opportunity to express his admiration, love, and pride. He cherished family reunions large and small, relishing the gentle ribbing of his sisters, brother, and many siblings-in-law. As a father and grandfather of a combined ten boys, his patience was legendary. "Papa Bear," as he was known by many, was a permanent fixture at his grandsons' baseball games, cherry slushie in hand. No matter how commonplace the occasion, Ed invariably took a moment to tell his loved ones how special it was to have that time together.

The family will be holding calling hours on Wednesday, July 30th, from 4pm to 7pm at Anthony Funeral Home, 2305 Monroe Avenue, Rochester, NY. They invite all those who wish to celebrate Ed's life to join them for a Mass of Christian Burial on Thursday, July 31st, at 1pm at St. Louis Church, 64 S. Main Street, Pittsford, NY. There will be a reception to follow at Oak Hill Country Club. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Edward W. Kay, Jr. may be made to St. Bernard's School of Theology, Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, St. Louis Catholic Church, and the Roman Catholic Diocese of Rochester.

Ed´s obituary is a testimony to a life well-lived in service to God and neighbor.

It should serve as a "Clean Opinion" to present to Saint Peter at the Gates to Heaven with "no exceptions noted" and "no further work considered necessary."

Rest in peace, Ed!

Ed was the classic partner any one would want in their firm. Great performer as an accountant...great person as a friend and colleague. He will indeed be missed by all left behind. Judy and I pray that the Good Lord has already accepted him with open arms. Judy & Jim Stalder

A shock to learn of Ed's passing, the third loss of a brother of NC Alpha this year. He was a calm and quiet friend with a ready smile. Kim, may God give you and your family the peace and joy of many shared memories. Gone too soon, but alive in the hearts of we who were blessed by knowing him.

Growing up across the street from energetic Ed and his wonderful siblings was one of the greatest, and most fun, joys of my childhood! My heart goes out to his whole family.

I took Ed to lunch on his PW recruitment day. I left that lunch a better man. Ed had a way of doing that. God bless all the many Kays.

I am shocked and saddened to learn of Ed's passing. Although the nickname never stuck at Duke, for me, he was always "steady Eddy," a sincere and positive element in my life, and anyone with whom he shared his time and presence. May God give Ed's loving family comfort.

Kim and family we are saddened and shocked by Ed´s passing. Ed´s happy place was always with his family or sharing stories of his family. A true Christian Soldier dedicated to his family and community. You are in our thoughts and prayers.

I was fortunate to work with Ed for 6 years in Rochester as the HR leader and I found him to be he one of the most encouraging fair persons on this planet. He was traditional in his work ethics and held a very high esteem for each and every person who crossed his path. He is a tremendous loss to his family and community and taken way to soon. I grieve with his family and know God has blessed Kim with her growing family near and far. My love to all of you in the Kay family.
