Edward Meyer Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Overman-Jones Funeral Home on Nov. 18, 2025.
Edward E. "Ed" Meyer, age 85, a resident of Bolingbrook, IL since 1980, formerly of Cincinnati, OH, passed away on Monday, November 17, 2025, at UChicago Medicine AdventHealth Hinsdale Hospital, Hinsdale, IL. He was born on October 27, 1940, in Cincinnati, OH.
Beloved husband of the late Mary Annette Meyer (nee Colby), whom he married December 3, 1966 and who preceded him in death on January 19, 1992, loving father of Gary (Georgeann) Meyer of Cincinnati, OH and David (Lisa) Meyer of Bolingbrook, adored grandfather of Justin, Amanda, Ashtin, Dylan, and Brooke Meyer, devoted son of the late Edward and Emma Meyer, fond cousin, uncle, great-uncle and friend of many.
Ed was born and raised in Cincinnati, OH where he graduated from the University of Cincinnati with a degree in Electrical Engineering and retained an active Professional Engineering license all these years. He met his wonderful wife Annette and had two wonderful sons. After an extensive career with Cincinnati Bell Telephone Company, he and his family relocated to Bolingbrook, Illinois to continue his career with Bell Systems Center for Technical Education. This is where his love of teaching began. He taught employee courses in telephone data systems and made hundreds of friends along the way. He continued his teaching career at Carnegie Mellon University where he took classes toward his doctorate in Electrical Engineering.
As an avid private, commercial, instrument and multi-engine pilot most of his life; Ed enjoyed flying with his family and friends. He and his wife grabbing breakfast at a new Illinois or Wisconsin airport was one of his favorite things to do. He was also an Airframe and Powerplant Licensee, Inspection Authorization Mechanic and a Designated Mechanic Examiner for the Federal
Aviation Administration. One of his fondest accomplishments was assisting a group of talented aviators and mechanics from the Clow Airport area with the re-creation of the Wright Flyer airplane, which now proudly hangs in the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry. If Ed was not in an airplane, he was inspecting one, teaching about one, or just chatting with his friends at his favorite place, Clow Airport, about a new airplane or upcoming project. Ed was honored as the recipient of the distinguished Charles Taylor Master Mechanic Award from the FAA for lifetime accomplishments of senior mechanics.
After retiring from the phone company, Ed thought it would be fun to teach physics and calculus for Lewis University in Romeoville. He loved teaching and he often said that his students kept him young at heart. At home, he could always be caught creating exams, grading, or coming up with his next curriculum.
To his friends at Burger King, who would join him every single morning for a fresh cup of coffee, he was just plain Ed. He enjoyed this most of all. To his family and friends, he was truly an inspiration for good and kindness.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, November 23, 2025, 1:00-5:00 PM at Overman-Jones Funeral Home, 15219 S. Joliet Road (Corner of Rtes. 30 59), Plainfield, IL 60544.
Family and friends will meet Tuesday, November 25, 2025, 1:30 PM Eastern at Baltimore Pike Cemetery, 3200 Costello Ave., Cincinnati, OH 45211, (513) 921-1216 for graveside services.

Ed Meyer was the spirit of Clow Airport. He helped all aviators and will be greatly missed. Ed will be taking care of all of the flying Angels in Heaven.

I just saw that Ed has passed. I had known Ed for 30 years at clow, from when i just started flying to working line service and beyond. I remember Ed brought an electric drag car to the airport and had someone run it down the runway. Later on, we shared a hangar with Ed for a short time, and he was always the highlight of the day. Ed will be missed, but never forgoten.

Within the first 20 seconds of meeting Ed two thoughts run through your mind. In the first 10 seconds with his slow country twang, you think "he's country boy". In the next 10 seconds you'll find out he might just be the smartest man you've ever met. I spent quite sometime with Ed we first met in his physics class, we hit it off like a couple of gangbusters. In our convos we consistently came back to one topic and that was hotrods. I remember me and Ed would talk about cars like we were both star struck 10 year olds, he never lost the child like curiosity about everything and anything that was fast, loud, and went bang. As a mechanic he was amazing, as a teacher he was caring, as a human being he was phenomenal.

"You're smarter than you look!" was a playful phrase Ed chimed out in my Math and Physics class at Lewis University. His wit, charm, brilliance, warm smile, and unwavering passion for aviation has had a profound affect on us all. It was a privilege to learn in your class. Wherever we go, we won't forget.

Clear skies and tailwinds, Ed. Gonna miss your warmth and ingenious soul.

We all admired Ed Meyer. He was one of the most influential men I have ever met. He truly left an indelible mark on anyone who was lucky enough to have known him. We love you Ed. Thank you for playing Cupid for my husband and I.

Ed was one of the kindest souls I have ever met. He always had a smile for you and would give you an instrument out of his airplane if you were in need. His happiness will be missed.

Smart, but a down to earth gentleman. He was my Electricity 2 instructor at Lewis. A very down to earth way to teach. Ed's approach allowed me to understand aircraft electricity, and because of his level of instruction I was able to be an Avionics Technician at the FedEx aircraft maintenance facility in Memphis. He will be sorely missed. Clear skies for your trip West.

When I think of Ed, I think of his intelligence, his vast knowledge and experience and his willingness to share it, his quiet humility and kindness, his enduring smile, and the ever-present twinkle in his eye. He will be sorely missed.

Ed, you will be greatly missed. I wish we had the opportunity to spend more time together working on planes and talking about hot rods. I'm sure John Nowicki and I will be talking about you for years to come. You were so humble that I never became aware of your vast accomplishments, like a doctorate in electrical engineering! To your family, I don´t know what to say. I do hope that time will quickly soften your sorrow and leave you only with cherished memories. With deepest sympathy, Martin

Fly High Ed! Whether thats in a DC3 or in our hearts. I will always remember you as an Aviator who had the knowledge, experience, and love, who shared the passion of Aviation like no other. I hope you are flying your Piper Apache or working on your Ercoupe with all your tools. You were a great influence on myself and my Dad. We looked up to your drive of waking up everyday to inspire and teach the next generation and living everyday like it is your last. You were the only person who knew that airplane or that manual or that technique. We lost a true legend in Aviation history. I am so appreciative of having you as my teacher, and as an old friend. Thanks for leaving an impact on my heart like you did to so many others.
Best wishes from myself Dennis, Dennis Sr, and the Radwanski Family.
