He graduated from Ole Miss with a BBA in Banking and Finance in 1969. Ed was a member of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity serving as the Secretary. He graduated from Ole Miss with a Juris Doctorate in 1972, served as President of the Senior Class, Treasurer of the Law School Student Body, and named Co-winner, Delta Theta Phi outstanding law student in the nation. Ed also served as President of Delta Theta Phi Legal Fraternity.
After receiving his law degree, Ed served two years as a 1st Lt. and Finance Officer in the U.S. Army, including a thirteen-month tour of duty in Korea (1972 - 1974). He was honorably discharged as a Captain.
Upon completion of his military duty, Ed joined the Bank of Clarksdale in September 1974; subsequently serving as President of the Clarksdale office for nine years. Later the bank changed its name to United Southern Bank and eventually merged with Union Planters Bank which today is known as Regions Bank. Ed served from 1981-1987 as a board member on the Financial Institutional Services Inc (FISI) Council, which represented over 3000 banks and savings and loans nationwide.
Ed retired from banking to pursue politics. He served five terms as Chancery Clerk from January 1996 to January 2016. During Ed's time as Chancery Clerk, he served as Secretary, Treasurer, Vice-President, and President (2007 – 2008) of the Mississippi Chancery Clerks' Association.
After Ed's retirement, he worked as a part time attorney from 2016 to the present, serving as attorney for the Clarksdale Tourism Commission.
Throughout Ed's life, he received numerous honors and awards. One of the honors that meant the most to him was receiving the Coahoma County Citizen of the Year Award in 2012. He also received the BPW Employer of the Year in 1991, and in 2007 he was honored as the Clarksdale Junior Auxiliary Patron of the Year.
Ed lived a full life of joyful service. He served as the Past President for the Coahoma County Chamber of Commerce, Coahoma County Bar Association, and the Clarksdale Rotary Club where he was named a Paul Harris Fellow. Ed was also the Co-Founder of Leadership Clarksdale, which later evolved to Youth Leadership Clarksdale. Ed joined the First United Methodist Church of Clarksdale in 1978 (which is now known as Clarksdale Methodist Church). He loved his Sunday School Class, the choir and the fellowship. Ed served as the past Chairman, Administrative Board, Lay Leader, and multiple terms as Chairman of the Finance Committee.
Those who knew Ed were aware of his passion for the Ole Miss Rebels. He was a season ticket holder for over fifty years and currently has season tickets for football, baseball, and men's basketball. Ed rarely missed a home game, and God-forbid anyone should schedule a wedding or a birthday party on a game day. Ed was actively involved with the University of Mississippi. He was a member of the Parents Association and the Ole Miss District Alumni Association, serving three terms on the Board of Directors.
Ed was faithful in sending cards to the sick, the elderly and those who had lost loved ones. Ed loved spending time with his family and friends. His grandchildren were the "apple of his eye." Ed took great delight in taking his children and grandchildren on trips. He also enjoyed spending time at the wood's deer hunting, reading books from the local library and any outdoor activity that included his grandchildren.
