Edward Jacob "Jake" Schuler, 78, of Olmstedville, NY, died April 8, 2025 in Ithaca, NY. Jake was born July 8, 1946 in Niskayuna, NY, the son of Edward H and Bertha (Fensken) Schuler. He graduated from Niskayuna High School in 1964. After attending Paul Smiths College and Wagner College, Jake embarked on a 40 year career in education as a teacher, principal, and superintendent. He was instrumental in securing the bond that allowed BOCES in Saranac Lake, NY to be built. Jake then went on to spend many years as a principal, and then the superintendent of schools in northern Vermont. He was a strong believer in helping students find their individual strengths and paths to success and took great pride in helping and supporting the students in his district. He was an avid skier and continued to participate in the profession on a part-time basis throughout his lifetime. During the 1980 Olympics in Lake Placid, NY, Jake served as the assistant chief of course referees, in charge of mapping all downhill ski events. Jake was a high school ski coach, senior alpine official and traveled to ski areas all over the northeast as a level 4 technical delegate. In the early 1990's, Jake was named VARA alpine official of the year and USSA eastern alpine official of the year. Along with Dean and Dale Lumbra, Jake founded Off Brothers Racing which became "the name" in ski racing at Jay Peak Resort in Vermont. This ragtag team used their talents to make ski racing happen in both sanctioned and promotional races. Eventually settling in Olmstedville, NY, he continued officiating and volunteering his free time to NYSSRA to help any way he could, from refereeing a race to helping tear down at the end of the event. Jake was predeceased by both of his parents and is survived by his beloved wife Barbara; two daughters, Amy Schuler of Saranac Lake, NY and Erin (Richard)Crossley of Bloomfield Hills, MI; three step-daughters, Jill Browning of Ithaca, NY, Pam (Stephen) Jacobs of Richford, VT, and Christine (Will) Clark of Belleville, IL; 10 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren, and his first wife, Lorraine Kelley.

I could go on about our antics together from days past, happy to have been a part of it all. However, despite all the humor and adventure we shared, what I remember most was your inclusiveness and ability to stay connected to (it seems like) everyone. For my part, when Ann passed away, you reached out and invited me to spend a few days in Key West just hanging out. Thanks for taking that time for me. That was you Jake.
As I said previously, in life you were larger than life, and in your passing you remain larger than life. I miss you my friend but I will always have many fond memories.

I am so sorry to hear of Jake's passing. He was my first building administrator as a fledging teacher. I admired his laid-back attitude and how easy he made it seem. He was a caring and kind man although I don't think he wanted anyone to know it. I loved his sense of humor and his quick retorts. In my mind's eye I see him in the office at AEC, sitting at his desk, asking ," What do you want now Rosa?". Thank you, Jake, for everything. Rest well. My sincere sympathy to his family and all his loved ones.

This is sad. Ed was so full of life. I knew Ed through junior high and high school and after. He had an incredible sense of humor and a wild imagination. I remember him from all the basement parties at Bob Cragin´s house and all the mischief he was always up to. I´m almost afraid to imagine what he´s planning to do next. He will be missed. We´ll catch up to you Ed. See you buddy.
