Memories. That's what we carry with us every day of our lives. They shape how we view the world, how we interact with others, how we view ourselves. 28 years of my life were spent creating memories with Edward Harris Schuth. I cannot begin to capture the richness, the essence of who Ed is in a few words, but I hope I can add to the images and feelings, the memories he created with each of you.
The Usual: Ed was born August 7, 1969, and raised in The Village of Evergreen Park, IL. His parents were Marilyn Carter Schuth, (deceased), and Edward George Schuth. He is survived by his wife, Melissa Ellis Schuth and his daughter, Mia Simone Schuth.
The Dry: Ed was the first of his family to go to college. He was a scholarship athlete at the University of Illinois obtaining his undergraduate degree in political science. He was a goalie for the University's ice hockey team. After graduating, Ed furthered his education at the Wake Forest University School of Law. He obtained his Juris Doctorate in 1995.
The Good Stuff: Ed wanted to make an impact on the world, for his life to have meaning. Nowhere was that more evident than the time that he spent coaching. When we first met, he was a student at Wake Forest University. His first love, hockey, filled every spare moment of time he had. Wake didn't have a hockey team, so Ed started one. It was a club team that played other schools like Duke and UNC. That club team is still in existence today. But that wasn't enough, he coached for the Winston Salem youth hockey association. More still, he was also Director of Hockey Operations and assistant coach for the Greensboro Monarchs, a professional hockey team based up the road in Greensboro, NC. It was because of hockey that we met. His love of coaching, and my love of watching the game, allowed our paths to come together.
After graduation, we moved around a bit. We were young and didn't know what we were doing and made many mistakes. It wasn't until we landed in Charlotte that we made our home. Mia came into our lives in 2007. Mia and Ed spent the first two nights in the hospital watching the World Series. Is it any wonder that she loved baseball? Like with many families, our lives were shaped by Mia's interests. It was her love for baseball that got Ed coaching again. For 12 years during the spring and fall seasons, Ed coached youth baseball at Dilworth Little League and Myers Park Trinity Little League. We met amazing families and made lifelong friends.
Ed loved the outdoors. He made every trip an adventure. When he wasn't on the ball field, he was always traveling with his family in tow. Nothing made him happier than sharing adventures with his girls. Those adventures usually led to fishing. Whether we were in the mountains or on the coast, Ed could always find a way to fish. Saltwater, freshwater, fly or spin, we did it all.
Ed had a lifelong love of learning and books. He had plans to obtain his PHD before cancer made it too difficult. He often wrote poems and short stories during his less active times. He loved photography and sailing. Towards the end, he had picked up oil painting again. He had many talents that allowed him to express his creative side.
Ed is off on the next great adventure, while we, his loved ones and friends, stay behind to finish our own journeys. Ed will be greatly missed leaving an unfillable void, but the love and friendship he leaves behind will forever impact those whose lives he touched.
