Edward Herman Swearer, 89, of Houston, Texas passed away peacefully on December 25, 2022 after a Christmas gathering at his home with his family. Ed was born in Canton, Ohio and moved to Houston when he was 2 years old. He graduated from Jeff Davis High School in 1952 then matriculated at the University of Houston where he earned his undergraduate degree in History and later, a master's degree in Education. While an undergraduate at the U of H, Ed was on the basketball and baseball teams. After graduating, he played semi-professional baseball in Texas and Louisiana as a pitcher, where he was paid $10 for every winning game.
Ed subsequently started his lengthy 35-year career in education as a history teacher and coach at Jane Long Junior High School in Houston Independent School District. He moved up the ranks to Assistant Principal at Jackson Junior High, and T.H. Rodgers Junior High, and then Principal at Sharpstown Junior High School. Ed was promoted to Associate Superintendent of HISD where he served the remainder of his career.
Baseball would always be an integral part of Ed's life. For many years, he was a coach, team manager, and 2-year President of the Sharpstown Little League at Bayland Park in Sharpstown. He was also an avid Houston Astros fan. In a word, Ed was an outdoorsman. He loved spending his summers saltwater fishing in his boat in the Gulf of Mexico and fall/winters hunting at his second home in Red Rock, Texas. Ed was also a skilled craftsman able to build or fix most anything. He passed these passions on to his two sons and daughter who are also ardent anglers, hunters, and craftsmen.
In 1955, Ed met Shirley, his beautiful, caring, kind and intelligent wife of 65 years with whom he made a home in Houston and raised three children, Jeff, Brad, and Michelle. They shared a partnership in school activities including the PTA where they were co-Presidents, many little league baseball endeavors, and an active social life with many friends.
Ed's quick wit, intelligence, strength, and loyalty made him beloved by his students, colleagues, little league players, many friends and family. Ed will be dearly missed and always remembered.
Ed was predeceased by his mother, father and six siblings. He is survived by his wife, Shirley; Jeff Swearer, son and wife, Belinda; Brad Swearer, son and wife, Gayle, Michelle Swearer, daughter; granddaughters, Ashleigh, and Morgan; and many nieces and nephews. We request Ed's friends and extended family join us in celebrating his life at Dettling Funeral Home located at 14094 Memorial Drive Houston, Texas 77079 on Wednesday, January 4, 2023. Visitation from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM with eulogies to follow.
