EDWARD LEE WHELAN of Eden Prairie, Minnesota age 87 passed away on 07/07/24 after a short battle with cancer.
Ed was born in Shelby, Montana in 1936. He moved to Edina, Minnesota at the age of 2. Ed attended Harley Hopkins Elementary School and Edina High School. During his high school years he enjoyed caddying at Interlachen Country Club. Upon graduation he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and was stationed in Okinawa, Japan. He saw no combat but worked as "A Remington Raider" (an office clerk typing memos and correspondence to help with the communication efforts). Upon his return to the USA he started work at First National Bank of Minneapolis (now US Bank) in their personnel department. He moved up the ladder to work in their bond sales department. He traveled throughout South Dakota, North Dakota and Montana selling bonds to banks. He later left US Bank and founded a bond sales company - Bond Portfolio Specialists (BPS) with his good friend Lou Coffey headquartered Bloomington MN.
In August 16, 1986 he married Julie Scheibe and they had 37 happy years together. They enjoyed sharing their faith, hobbies, friends and travel. Ed and Julie took their children and grandchildren on many family vacations to Jamaica and Mexico. They traveled extensively also to Ireland, Yellowstone, Nashville, Branson, Arizona, Niagara Falls, cruises and many other places. Ed also loved going on his annual fishing trip with his son, grandkids and other father/son connections. Ed retired at 65 and said "you have to have something to retire to"..... His many hobbies included woodworking, golf, fishing, biking, guns, cooking nicknaming himself Eddie Crocker specializing in many things including his fruitcake for Christmas. He eventually started Whelan's Wheels & Deals - a fun way to give back to people collecting, repairing and selling/gifting people repurposed bikes, repaired golf clubs. He loved gathering friends and family and entertaining them at their home for special occasions or for no reason at all. He especially enjoyed the Cocktails in the Cul-de-sac every Friday evening with the neighbors who became such an important part of their lives.
Ed is survived by his wife Julie Scheibe Whelan, his children Bradley Whelan (Nancy Light) and Katherine Whelan and his two beloved grandchildren Nick and Rachel Whelan (Connor Clayton), his dog Pixie, many extended family and many, many friends.
A funeral will be held at Cross View Lutheran Church, 6645 McCauley Trail West, Edina, MN on Monday, July 15, 2024 at 3:00 pm with a service immediately followed by visitation at the church with coffee and desserts. Ed had the biggest heart of anyone I knew. He was willing to help everyone. I will miss his teasing but even more so, I will miss him. I'm sure he went straight to heaven.
My sympathy to his family and friends.

My sympathies to Ed´s family. Ed loved fixing up bicycles and our two kids benefited greatly from Ed´s passion. He was interested in equipping kids with just the right bike to get around. He was consistently outgoing and happy - I´m sorry for your loss, Laura Thomas
