My contact with Eddie Dentz was limited to the 1941-1942 academic year – my first at DC’s Calvin Coolidge High School. During that year Eddie was commanding officer of the school’s Cadet Corps regiment; I was a private. However, even from my lowly station during that brief period I soon realized that Eddie’s conduct, not only as a cadet officer, but in all aspects of life, was worthy of admiration and emulation.

I met Eddie Dentz when I came to work for the City of Alexandria in September 1980. He was in charge of the Alcoholism Services Division. He was revered for his gentle leadership style, his humor, his compassion, and his support for his staff and for the agency clients. I can picture his smile and remember his soft voice. My thoughts are with his family.

Evey, We were so sorry to hear of Eddie's death.... He will be missed so very much by so many. All the years of service to others will now certainly leave a void without him. He did so much for my mother and for EJ when they needed help, as did you. Thank you again for all of that. We hope that you can find some comfort in all the wonderful memories you must have.

Eddie was a true gentleman, a selfless servant and fine leader who made the American Legion a better and more effective organization and Virginia Boys State a better and more successful program. I was fortunate to work with him for many years on the latter and am saddened by his passing. Deepest sympathy to his family for your loss.

Dear Evey, We are so sorry to hear of Ed's passing. We so enjoyed you as our neighbors, and still think of Ed as he so carefully tended the roses (and taught me to do so!) in the garden between our homes. God Bless.

Dear Evey and American Legion members:
Eddie Dentz was beyond doubt a “one-of-a-kind” gentleman who epitomized the label the “greatest generation.” He served this nation with his military and civilian service and continued on for countless years with the American Legion and its Boys State program. I am grateful to have known Eddie and will miss his always-positive attitude and sage advice. What a wonderful person. I suspect there are some new Legion Posts being organized in heaven.
