St. Augustine, FL - Edwin Duncan O'Sullivan, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on September 4, at the age of 92. Ed was a long-time resident of
St. Augustine, FL, where he was known for his smile, personality, sharp wit, helping hand to neighbors and friends (and strangers), and his unwavering faithful commitment to his church and community.
Ed was a devoted family man. He is survived by his beloved wife of 67 years, Jacqueline, who he affectionately called Lynn (or Lynnie), his children, Brenda Bushell (Anthony), Catherine Molinaro (Richard), Nora Mason (Michael), and Edwin O'Sullivan Jr. (Monica), and two nephews Christopher Braun (Leela) and Andrew Braun (Leigh) who Ed and Jacqueline raised as their own sons, as well as his grandchildren Kelly Youngs (Richard), Holly and Luke Molinaro, Zach, Sam and Ben Mason, Pedro O'Sullivan, Alexi and Jason Braun, Larissa and Aedin Braun, and his great-grandchildren Elijah and Annabelle Youngs, and his brothers Neil O'Sullivan (Carol), Brian, and Jerem O'Sullivan (Ellen). Ed took immense pride in his children's, grandchildren's, and great-grandchildren's achievements and would brag about them all whenever he had the opportunity. Ed is also survived by many nieces and nephews and their children, all who admiringly called him Uncle Eddie.
Born on July 20, 1932, in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, NY, to Timothy and Mary (Bernice) O'Sullivan, Ed grew up in a busy household of nine, surrounded by his brothers Donal, Kevin, Neil, Brian and Jerem, and his one sister, Margaret (Peggy) Kelly, who he adored. He grew up in Merrick, NY, and later in Shoreham, NY along the Long Island Sound, where the pebble beach was just a stroll down the boardwalk away.
After attending Wellington C. Mephan High School and New York City Community College, Ed served his country in the U.S. Army with honor in the Korean War. Later in his life, he wore his Korean War Veteran hat often, and with such pride. Following his service in the military, Ed spent over 32 years in the food service industry, in management roles at Sky Chef and Port Authority of NY & NJ, where he was respected by colleagues and admired for his lengthy list of awards and accomplishments. His distinguished career included designing and supervising the construction of six dining facilities in the World Trade Center, NYC. Ed was recognized with so many professional awards in the food service industry and was most proud of his "Royal Order of the Skillet" and "Distinguished Order of the Dinner Gong," both presented by the International Food Service Executive Association, where he served as an officer and member for many years. Throughout Ed's professional career, he expanded his knowledge and continued learning and seeking excellence, always adding to his own skillset and the library of advice he would share with others in the food industry.
Ed was extremely proud of his military service. Many years after active service, he was named an honorary Brigadier General in the U.S. Army when he was called back to inspect and grade dining installations around the world for both the U.S. Army and U.S. Air Force.
Ed had a deep faith in God and was an active member of St. Anastasia Catholic Church where he generously gave his time and resources, always helping others in need. He was a member of the St. Vincent DePaul Society, American Legion, Knights of Columbus Council 7121, the Korean War Veterans Association, and Council on Aging, where he delivered Meals on Wheels until the age of 88. He was also a pillar of the Commodores Club neighborhood, and every dog's favorite person, where one of his favorite pastimes was sitting in the rocker outside his house waiting for neighborhood pups to visit for a treat.
God gave us a wonderful gift. For 92 years, Ed's kindness, generosity, integrity, wisdom, and spirit touched so many lives. He is leaving a legacy of love, respect, hard work, and service, which will be continued forever in his memory.
The funeral service for Edwin Duncan O'Sullivan will be on September 16th at the 9:00 Mass at St. Anastasia's Catholic Church, St. Augustine, where family and friends are invited to celebrate his life. The eulogy will be read before the start of Mass at 8:45 AM. In lieu of flowers, Ed's family asks that donations be made in his memory to Council on Aging Meals On Wheels, 180 Marine Street,
