Edwina (Edie) Curtis, 95, of Kalamazoo, MI, formerly of Grand Island, NY and St. Augustine, FL passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 9, 2025, surrounded by her loving family at Rose Arbor Hospice in Kalamazoo, MI. Born in Lock Haven, PA on October 3, 1930, to the late Edward and Jeannette (Crider) Sohmer, she was the second born of their seven children.
Edie was one of nine classmates graduating from Immaculate Conception High School in Lock Haven, PA and she stayed in contact with her classmates throughout her life.
She raised her children while living in Levittown, PA before moving to Grand Island, NY where she earned a business degree from Niagara County Community College. She worked for the Town of Grand Island and spent many years as an administrative assistant for the Grand Island school system, retiring from Kaegebein Elementary School in 1994.
In 1993 she married her devoted husband Wayne Curtis, and they enjoyed traveling the country together in their RV before settling in St. Augustine, FL. In 2018, they moved to Heritage Community in Kalamazoo, MI. She was a devout Catholic throughout her life, attending weekly services at St. Monica’s Catholic Church in Kalamazoo.
Edie was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Mary Laird, and her granddaughter Beth Ann Enama.
She is survived by her beloved husband Wayne and their dog Goldie; her children Steven (Shelle) Shive of Levittown, PA; Debbie (Jerry) Enama of Portage, MI; Amy (John) Kowzan of Raleigh, NC; and Robert Shive of Glenville, NY and stepchildren Tim (Debbie) Curtis, of Elk Grove, CA; Rick (Sienna) Curtis of Portland, OR; Pete Curtis, of Salinas, CA. Edie was endlessly proud of and much loved by her grandchildren Brooke (Joseph) Jamison, Ryan (Amanda) Shive, Katie (Al) Coffman, Julia Kowzan, Emily (Bret) Ritter, Jamie (Brian) Gannon, Bobby (Tracy) Shive, Kelsey (Andrew) Boughton, Kaylee (Joe) Stella; her step-grandchildren Willow (Alexis) Curtis, Emily (Shea) Curtis-Graham, Galen (Faith) Curtis, Priscilla Curtis and her 17 great-grandchildren Henry, Ella, Olivia, Amelia, Logan, Jack, Lily, Breslyn, Grady, Kieran, Mason, Carter, Leo, Sienna, Nolan, Wilson, and Milo.
She is also remembered with love by special family members Denisse Miro-Quesada, Mary Ann Shive, and Anna Dagostino.
