Effie Ellen Toney, 88, of Pittsburg, passed away at 3:01 a.m., Saturday, June 21, 2025 at Via Christi Village.
She was born March 19, 1937 at Girard, Kansas, the daughter of John and Alice (Harris) Sweet. She attended a one-room in Cato and then graduated from Girard High School.
On May 10, 1966, she was united in marriage to Larry Toney in Miami, Oklahoma.
Mrs. Toney worked for the Census Bureau. She was also a Real Estate Agent, done Income Taxes, and worked at Walmart.
She was the President of the Ladies Auxiliary VFW Post 1158 for many years until it closed, a member of NARFE and the Quilting Guild, a former member of the First Baptist Church, an avid quilter and crocheter.
Survivors include her husband, Larry Toney of the home; four sons, Stan Trytek of Girard, KS, John Trytek of Okinawa, Japan, Larry Toney (Michelle) of Iola, KS, and Howard Toney (Staci) of Frontenac, KS; a daughter, Deta Brunch (Robert) of Franklin, KS; two sisters, Patsy Stoddard of Nevada and Bess Strukel of Girard, KS; a half-sister, Johnnie K. Rhea of Wichita, KS; six grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a daughter Meletta Ann Toney, a brother, Jim Sweet, two half-brothers, David and Larry Harris; and a half-sister, Charolette Houseworth.
A Visitation will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Friday (June 27th) at Brenner Mortuary in Pittsburg, KS. A private family graveside will be held in the Pleasant Valley Cemetery in Hiattville, KS. The family suggests memorials be given to VFW in La Harpe, KS, or SEK Humane Society. These may be left at or mailed to the Brenner Mortuary, 114 E. 4th St., Pittsburg, KS 66762. Friends may leave condolences online at www.brennermortuary.com. Arrangements are under the direction of Brenner Mortuary, Pittsburg, KS.
