Gary Wayne "Moot" Johnson, 83, passed peacefully July 5, 2025 at Ascension Living Via Christi Village in Pittsburg, Kansas. He was born in Girard on July 1, 1942 but lived most of his life as a proud "Farlingtonite". His parents were Opal (Fry) and Raymond Johnson, and they preceded him in death.

Survivors are Craig (Kristin) Johnson of Girard, Wade (Lori) Johnson of Girard, Jason (Lorie) Johnson of Columbus, Chris (Amy) Johnson of Columbus, Ryan (Ronda) Herlocker of Girard, and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Gary was preceded in death by his sister, Phyllis Herlocker.

Gary graduated from Girard High School in 1960 and subsequently graduated from Pittsburg State University in 1967. Gary was a gifted, competitive athlete and he enjoyed participating in school and community sports. He worked at the Kansas Army Ammunition Plant in Parsons, Va-Co-Hy Printing in Girard and for many years he was a rancher, farmer, and always a fisherman! In his later years, Gary was an extensive collector of antique tools and always eager to share a tall tale with old friends.

During the past few years, due to failing health, his companion and friend, Judy Collins, was his caregiver.

He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.

Burial will be at a later date in the Girard Cemetery.

The family suggests memorials to The Fallen Trojans and these may be left at the Smith-Carson-Wall Funeral Home, 518 W St. John, Box 258, Girard, 66743.
