BENTAS, Efthemios J. "Tim" World War II Veteran and Well-Known Lowell Attorney Efthemios J. "Tim" Bentas, 100, of Palm Beach, Florida, formerly of Boston and Lowell, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully, on Friday, January 30, 2026, at Good Samaritan Hospital. He was the loving husband for over fifty years of Lily (Haseotes) Bentas, who survives him. Born on September 3, 1925, he was the son of the late John E. and Vaitsa (Laios) Bentas. He was predeceased by his brother, Dr. Christos J. Bentas; and his sisters, Kleonike and Thalia Bentas. Tim attended the present day Hellenic American Academy Grammar School and graduated from Lowell High School in the class of 1943. He enlisted in the U.S. Army on July 21, 1943, right after graduating from high school and was very proud of his service. In April 1944, Tim completed Air Corps Basic Training at Wofford College in Spartanburg, South Carolina. He then was attached to the Headquarters of the Office of Strategic Services, the OSS, in Caserta, Italy, from February to August of 1945, where he completed Radio Operations Training at the Mediterranean Theater Signal School. After the Allied victory in Europe, Tim was being prepared for the invasion of Japan. In August of 1945, Tim was aboard a troop train in West Palm Beach, Florida, when Japan's surrender was announced. He was honorably discharged from the Military on March 17, 1946. After the Army, Tim attended Brown University, graduating with the class of 1950. He then graduated from Suffolk University with a law degree in 1958 and was admitted to the Massachusetts Bar in 1960. He worked as a District Attorney in Middlesex County from 1960-1963 and was a member of the Lowell and Massachusetts Bar Associations. In 1964, he became a solo practitioner in Lowell and was affiliated with the Lowell law firm of Goldman & Curtis, from 1978 until his retirement in 2015. Tim was a lifelong member of the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Lowell, a member of St. Catherine Greek Orthodox Church in West Palm Beach, FL, and also St. George Greek Orthodox Church in Centerville, MA. He also belonged to many other Greek American organizations, including Leadership 100, a national non-profit organization whose mission is to advance the Orthodox Faith and Hellenism in America. Tim is also survived by several generations of nieces, nephews, Godchildren and many dear friends; including his primary caregiver, Steven Wade. Services were private.
