Elaine Marie Carter (nee VanDunk), passed away on March 27, 2025 in Alexandria, VA at the age of 92. Her beloved husband of 59 years Walter Curry Carter, Jr., parents LeRoy and Ida VanDunk, and siblings Gloria VanDunk, Winton VanDunk, Rolando VanDunk and Marion VanDunk Jones preceded her in death. She is survived by her nieces Vicki Davis, Margaret VanDunk and their children.
Elaine was born in Suffern, NY but has been a resident of the DC Metro area for over 51 years. She worked in a variety of roles in different industries throughout her life but spent over 20 years as a civilian employee for the Department of Defense, notably as the head of administrative assistants for her division at the Pentagon until her retirement.
Elaine traveled extensively throughout Europe with her Wally during his military assignments abroad and a highlight was riding on the Orient Express, though her favorite destination was Hawaii where she visited many, many times. She learned Spanish while she lived in Spain and had a very strong command of the language. She was an avid walker, enjoyed the performing arts, cooked lavish meals and loved to entertain.
Elaine will be interred July 9th at Arlington National Cemetery in a private ceremony, but family and friends are welcome to celebrate and honor her life at the Watergate at Landmark condominium community, beginning at 1230pm on Thursday, July 10th in Alexandria, VA. Memories, lunch and refreshments will be provided. Please call Nancy Winston at 703-819-1171 by July 8th if you will be joining.
