Elba Maria Lopez, affectionately known as Elba to her friends and family, passed away peacefully on April 8, 2025, in Staten Island, NY, at the age of 87. Born on March 28, 1938, in the sun-drenched island of Puerto Rico, Elba carried the warmth of her homeland throughout her life, touching the hearts of those around her with her radiant spirit.Elba's journey led her from Puerto Rico to the vibrant communities of New York, where she pursued her passion for education at the City University of New York. She dedicated her professional life to shaping young minds as an esteemed member of the Board of Education, working at JHS 65 then finishing her forty plus year career at I S 131 with unwavering commitment and care. Her influence extended beyond the classroom walls, as she was actively involved in various associations, advocating for the importance of learning and personal development.A true matriarch, Elba's life was a testament to the bonds of family. Though she was predeceased by her beloved children, David, Benjamin, Elba, and Jeanette, her legacy is carried on by her daughter, Nancy Dauria, and her husband, Michael. Her loving brother, Jose Lugo, alongside his wife, Lisa, also survives her. Elba's joy was multiplied through her cherished grandchildren, Donald and his children Angelina and Ethan, Donna and her children Olivia(Des'jenee), Terrell, Jonissa, Lena (Alandrea) and Jah'quin., Michael and his children, Paloma, Ziva and Michael jr., Charese and her children Nilasia and Aiden. Nilasia's son, Amir. Jennifer and her children, Thomas Jr., Lexus and her daughter Luna, Anani and Andrew. Marcus and his children, Em Loren and Ethan, Natacha and her son, Steven.. Each of them was a precious thread in the vibrant tapestry of her life. An ardent fan of the New York Mets, Elba's enthusiasm for the game was infectious. She found great pleasure in cheering on her favorite team, sharing this pastime with friends and family, and celebrating every triumph with a heart full of joy. Her love for the game was just one of the many ways she connected with those around her, creating lasting memories filled with laughter and camaraderie. Those who knew Elba would describe her as a loving and generous soul, a woman of deep faith who navigated life's challenges with grace and resilience. She was the embodiment of kindness, always extending a helping hand to those in need and offering words of encouragement. Her presence was a source of comfort, and her ability to listen and empathize made her a confidante to many. Elba's unwavering faith was the cornerstone of her life, guiding her through every season of joy and sorrow. It was this faith that instilled in her the strength to face each day with hope and the certainty that love is the greatest legacy one can leave behind. She was active in the church choir at St. James Church. She also sang at her grandchildren's communion ceremonies. As we bid farewell to Elba Maria Lopez, we celebrate a life lived to its fullest, marked by an enduring love for family, a passion for education, and a spirit of generosity that knew no bounds. Her light will continue to shine brightly through the lives of those she touched, and her memory will be cherished forever.
