Elizabeth Ann “Liz” Martin McHugh passed on to her new life on February 28, 2026, at age 87. Born May 6, 1938, in Wolfsville, MD, she was the daughter of the late Richard Adam and Gladys Rhae Shuff Martin. She was raised in Wolfsville, MD, and graduated from Middletown (Maryland) High School in 1956, then living in Frederick County until moving to NJ in the 1960’s.

She and her husband James Henry McHugh were married on September 16, 1984, at the Parsippany United Methodist Church in Parsippany, NJ.

After her marriage to Jim in 1984, she worked as his financial sales assistant with Thomson McKinnon Securities, and Prudential Securities, until their retirement in 1994. Jim & Liz lived in various states throughout the Southeast US and enjoyed traveling for many years, before settling in Gallatin, TN in 2020. They were truly “partners in life”, and they were rarely seen apart from one another. They were past members of the Branson United Methodist Church in Missouri where they were active workers at the Church’s Thrift Shop and in other church activities. When they lived in Charleston, SC, they volunteered over 10,000 hours at the LowCountry Food Bank. They were avid “walkers” and often walked over 1,000 miles a year together.

In addition to her parents, she was pre-deceased by her former husbands, Philip H. Welty and Lynn W. Pett; brother, Richard L. Martin; sister, Doris J. Martin Fogle; brother, Ronald L. Martin; and brother-in-law, Robert Fogle.

Liz is survived by her husband, Jim of Gallatin, TN; son, Philip Craig Welty (Kellie) of Elverta, CA; daughter, Deirdre A. Welty Pizzo of East Stroudsburg, PA; grandchildren, Joshua C. Welty (wife Sabrina, and daughter Morgan), Mallory E. (Welty) Vest (husband Mitchell and great-grandaughters Tessa Vest, and Eve Vest, Gemma Vest, and Emory Vest); Sarah L. (Welty) Cray (husband Michael and great-grandchildren Ella Cray, Luna Cray, and Arlo Cray); Hannah M. Welty, Deandra A. DeRosa (husband Jay), Ryan A. Pizzo (daughter Gianna), Alyssa R. Pizzo (son Gunner); and sisters-in-law Sherry Martin of Jefferson, MD and Ann Martin of Frederick, MD.

A celebration of Liz's life will be held at the Salem Community Church in Wolfsville, MD at the convenience of the family, with burial to follow in the Salem Community Church Cemetery.
