Elko Schutte Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Joseph J Smith Funeral Home Inc on Feb. 6, 2022.
Elko Schutte, 85, of Mahopac, NY passed away peacefully on February 4th, 2022. He was born in Slovenia on February 15, 1936, son of George and Frances Schutte. He was predeceased by his wife of 45 years, Maria Schutte and his eldest son Frank Schutte.
At the age of 15, Elko immigrated to the US in 1951, settling initially in Brooklyn and working in the construction industry. Having to work, he couldn't finish high school, although that didn't stop him from becoming educated, learning from the experience he gained through the years. Wisdom he unknowingly and unselfishly passed on to others. He moved his family to Mahopac in 1967, remaining a resident there for the next 65 years. A great father and grandfather, Elko will be remembered as a jack of many trades, a strong, driven man that worked hard to provide a better life for his family. With an incredible work ethic and a big heart, he was always willing to lend a helping hand to those in need, and his presence will be dearly missed. He was a long-time NY Ranger hockey fan, but he truly loved soccer, especially European soccer and, like many of his old country companions, couldn't wait for the World Cup Tournament every four years.
Elko is survived by two sons, William and Richard Schutte, three grandchildren Jessica, Alexandra and Samantha, his brother Herb, sister Helen and several nieces and nephews.
Visiting will be held on Tuesday, February 8 from 11 am to 1 pm followed by a prayer service led by Father Bob Verrigni at the Joseph J Smith Funeral Home, 692 US-6 Mahopac, NY with interment to follow at Ballard-Barrett Cemetery, Mahopac Falls NY.
