Ellen Louise Guyer, passed away peacefully at home on October 20, 2023, at the age of 72 in Saddlebrooke (Tucson), Arizona. She was born on August 11, 1951 in Green Bay, Wisconsin to Paul and Marian Doege, who preceded her in death.
Ellen was an exceptionally loving wife and mother, and her unwavering loyalty extended to the many friends she made throughout her life. She had a thirst for new challenges and experiences, constantly seeking to extend her personal universe.
Ellen's education included graduating from Minnetonka High School in Minnetonka, MN. She went on to earn a Bachelor's degree from the University of Montana in Missoula and a Master's degree from Columbia University in New York. Additionally, Ellen pursued further studies at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis.
Throughout her career, Ellen made a significant impact in various fields. She dedicated her time and energy as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Gabon, Africa, where she taught English. Later, she taught Linguistics and English as a Second Language at Macalester College in St. Paul, MN, where she inspired countless students. Ellen's dedication to education led her to become the Dean of Academic Programs at Macalester College, further shaping the institution's academic landscape.
In Oro Valley, AZ, Ellen played an active role in her community. She served as the Chair of the Oro Valley Historic Preservation Society and served on the Boards of Oro Valley Parks and Recreation Board and the city's General Plan. Ellen's commitment to volunteerism was recognized when she was named Volunteer of the Year in Oro Valley.
Outside of her professional endeavors, Ellen found joy in various hobbies. She loved knitting, reading, canoeing, alpine backpacking, hiking in the desert, embarking on worldwide travel adventures, and wine tasting. One of her favorite pastimes was flying with her husband to remote locations, creating cherished memories together.
Ellen is survived by her husband, Leland Guyer, who stood by her side throughout their journey. She also leaves behind her daughter, Megan Hicks, and son-in-law, Thomas Hicks. Ellen's granddaughter, Emily Hicks, brought immense joy to her life. She is also survived by her sister, Jean Winters (Steven Patregnani), and her nephew and nieces, Michael Winters (Sydney Winters), Sarah Winters (Fredrik Granström), Molly Winters, and her grandnephew Owen Winters.
