Celebrating the Life of ELVIN McCOY BIGGINS...
Elvin McCoy Biggins was born on April 15, 1944, in Fort Worth, Texas, to the proud parents Earl "Jack" and Sarah Biggins. He often spoke of his early years in Ferris and time spent with his Uncle Alfred and Aunt Essie, before the family later settled in Dallas, where Elvin received his formal education.
A 1961 graduate of Lincoln High School, Elvin had already begun to shape his path. As a teenager, he worked as a golf caddy, diligently saving his earnings. Upon graduation, he wasted no time- immediately moving to Los Angeles, California, to pursue his dream of becoming a professional golfer, where he lived for 64 years.
Elvin's passion and dedication to the sport paid off. He achieved semi-pro status and competed and won numerous tournaments, earning sponsorships from notable brands like Callaway and Titleist. One of his favorite stories was playing alongside the legendary Lee Elder, the first Black golfer to win the Masters-who, like Elvin, hailed from Dallas. Golf was his first love, and even a year before his passing, he was still playing-offering lessons and tips at his niece's Shalondria's golf tournament at Oak Cliff Golf Club.
With his tall frame, dazzling smile, and warm, conversational nature, Elvin naturally drew people in. These qualities opened doors throughout California, placing him in the company of celebrities, musicians, and politicians and all who fell under his charm. He played on nearly every golf course in Southern California, Las Vegas, Phoenix, and beyond. A proud member of the historic Chester Washington Golf Club, Elvin played nearly every day, continuing to teach lessons.
Even as he found success away from home, Elvin never forgot where he came from. He regularly sent money to his beloved mother-whom he tenderly called "Darling" -and made sure each return to Dallas felt like a celebration. When Alvin came home, it was as though a rock star had arrived-bearing gifts, money, and unforgettable stories.
Elvin was a faithful member of McCoy Baptist Church for forty plus years, teaching the Pastors how to play. He returned to Texas a year and a half ago as his health began to decline. On April 15, 2025-his 81st birthday-he took his last swing, as he was called home to be with the Lord.
Elvin McCoy Biggins lived boldly, loved deeply, and left an indelible mark on all who knew him. A life well lived. Left to cherish his memories: Sisters-Betty Jo Lane, Gwen Jackson Crawford (Freddie), Yolander Thomas, Adrian Jackson Osin (OkingHabib), all of Dallas, Texas; special Nieces-Shalondria Galimore and Raven Jackson, and a host of relatives and friends.
