Elwin Eugene Greer, lovingly known as Ed, ran through the Pearly Gates of Heaven, Parkinson free, on January 14, 2025, after a 12 day stay at Saint Agnes due to a bowel obstruction and cancer in his esophagus/stomach. The family is thankful to the many nurses and staff on 2 West and in the ICU who lovingly provided care.
Elwin, is survived by Twila Greer, (formerly Allen) his best friend, soulmate and wife of 60 years and their children Jimmy Greer and Tammy Greer, all of Fresno, CA. Elwin has 5 grandchildren, Nicole Robinson (Branferd), Jessie Sales, Noah Greer, Logan Greer and Marie "Mimi" Elias (Salvador). Elwin has 1 great granddaughter, Peyton (Nicole and Branferd), and a great grandson due in April 2025 (Mimi and Sal). Ed is survived by siblings, Betty Mayfield (Modesto), Frances East (Sanger) and Jim Greer (Los Banos).
Elwin was born in Reedley, CA February 23, 1946 to William Edward Greer and Helen Marie Greer (both deceased). Elwin was the youngest of 8. Siblings who preceded him in death are: Bill Greer, Clarence Greer, Geneva McCormick and Virginia Gray.
Elwin grew up in the San Joaquin Valley (Orange Cove, Orosi, Sanger) CA and graduated from Reedley High School in 1964. During his Junior year, he met and fell in love with Twila Allen. Elwin and Twila became husband and wife a few months after they graduated High School on November 7, 1964.
Elwin was an avid athlete, participating in track, basketball, football and baseball while in high school. Although he enjoyed most sports, his love was baseball.
Elwin was working in the gas station industry when the young couple was married. In March of 1967, the couple decided to begin a family through adoption and sought help from a recommended attorney in San Francisco. During the very first call Twila made, the attorney told her a baby girl was born the day before and Tammy was picked up a few days later and brought home to Kingsburg, CA. The young family transferred to Lake Tahoe for Elwin's job. It was here that Elwin and Twila determined they did NOT like living in the snow. They moved back to the Valley and lived in Sanger and Fresno. Three years later, Jimmy was born and adopted.
In 1972, Elwin built one of the first gas stations on Interstate 5 at State Route 165, 8 miles South of Los Banos, CA. The family moved to Los Banos, where both children attended local schools and graduated from Los Banos High School in 1985 and 1989. Elwin operated the station on the hill for 38 years. It was a family enterprise with his children, siblings and many other relatives working there.
Over the years, Elwin participated in sports leagues in Los Banos playing fast pitch and basketball, and he even sponsored Ed's Mobil teams. In his mid to later years, Elwin enjoyed playing golf.
Most of his life, Elwin was involved in church, teaching Sunday school, leading Royal Rangers, singing in the choir, greeting on Sunday mornings and doing just about anything that was asked of him.
In the 1990's, Elwin and Twila moved to Carmel and then Monterey, CA. After a few years, they were lured to Fresno in 2002 by grandchildren.
Ed was known for his love of family, faith in God, friendliness, compassion, hard work, generosity and integrity and is recognized by many as a great boss, friend and athlete. To his family he is all of the above and so much more! Elwin loved his family deeply and showed it through his dedication to provide for them, his support of their activities and the joy he got from being around them. He loved to laugh and tease, cuddle, wrestle, play table games, corn hole and making waffles or getting "donies" for the grandkids.
We, your family, are so grateful for the legacy you have left behind. We will always remember and love you, and daily we are impacted by you. Until we meet again
Elwin's Celebration of Life will take place on February 15, 2025 at 11:00 AM at Trinity Community Church, 12168 N Willow Ave, Clovis, CA 93619
