Emil Baciu Obituary

Published by Legacy on Oct. 8, 2025.
Emil Eugene Baciu, 87, of Zionsville, passed away peacefully at home on March 5, 2025, surrounded by his family.
Emil was born in East Chicago, Indiana to parents, Sabina & John Baciu on December 22, 1937. He went to East Chicago Washington High School and graduated in 1956. While working as an electrician at Youngstown Sheet & Tube, he attended and graduated from Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago earning a degree in math and physics. He worked for 29 years as a lead systems programmer at the University of Chicago.
Emil was affectionately known as "Moe" by his older brothers, cousins, and friends. He was proud of his Romanian Heritage. He was a loving man who cherished his family. He will be remembered for his dry sense of humor, his kindness, his vast knowledge in math, history, and science, his excellent craftsmanship, and his many interests and hobbies. He enjoyed reading, doing the newspaper crossword puzzle and cryptoquote, drinking wine, watching movies, learning new computer code, listening to classical and jazz music and old time radio shows, spending hours in his workshop, finishing a puzzle, and collecting tools, books, and erector sets. He was never bored as there was always a house project to be completed, a hardware store, antique shop, library, or coffee shop to visit, a math problem to solve, a vacation to go on and family to see.
Emil is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Julie; daughters, Lisa (Bob) Sheridan, Emily (Scott) Makinson, and Jeanine (Walter) Grathwohl; grandchildren, James, Megan, and Monica Sheridan, Elia, Sadie, and Rogan Makinson, William, Matthew, Vivienne, and Robert Grathwohl; sisters-in-law, Dana Vozar and Jean (Jerry) Phelps; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers & sisters-in-law, John (Aurelia) Baciu and Nick (Vicky) Baciu; his in-laws, Dino & Jeanette DellaSantina; and brother-in-law, Joe Vozar.
Friends and family will be received Saturday, March 8, 2025 at 10:00 AM at St. Alphonsus Liguori Catholic Church, 1870 W. Oak St. Zionsville, IN 46077, with Mass starting at Noon.
