Obituary published on Legacy.com by Haughey Funeral Home, Inc. on Dec. 12, 2025.
On the morning of December 7, 2025, Emily Claire Lowery completed her earthly journey at her home in Gang Mills, surrounded by her children, her husband, and her close friend, Linda Yonkin. Born in
Cleveland, Ohio on September 10, 1944, Emily lived a life filled with warmth, creativity, and a witty charm that put everyone around her at ease. Her life's path led her from Cleveland to Columbus, Ohio, then to East Rutherford, New Jersey, before she settled in Steuben County, where she made her home for more than 50 years.
Emily's zest for life was unmistakable. She loved live music and had a deep appreciation for art. She poured her creativity into baking and decorating, especially her famous Christmas cookies, and she was an accomplished seamstress who made clothing for herself and her children when they were young. She adored the beach and looked forward each year to her Virginia Beach trips with her husband, often joined by dear friends.
Emily was a woman of many talents and achievements. She earned her bachelor's degree from the University of Dayton, worked for Prentice Hall in layout and page design, and later dedicated 33 years to Guthrie Medical Group in pediatrics and the business office. She was a longtime member and devoted volunteer at the Corning Painted Post Historical Society, where her concord grape pies became a beloved staple at events held at the Benjamin Patterson Inn. She was also active in the Junior Woman's Club of Corning and was a founding member of Y.A.K. (Young American Kids). She was a dedicated supporter of the Corning Museum of Glass and frequently attended its special events.
Emily's faith was central to her life. As an active member of All Saints Parish in Corning, she served on the Liturgy Committee and devoted many years to planning church decor and sewing beautiful banners for each liturgical season.
Emily is survived by her loving husband, James Lowery; her children, Victor Russo, Jessica Russo, and Alexis (Alex) Distler; her granddaughter, Cecily Russo; and her sister, Barbara Farris. She was predeceased by her parents, James and Mary Thornton; sister, Miriam Hill; and her brothers-in-law, Keith Farris and Michael Lowery.
Emily will be dearly missed by all who knew her. In her honor, the family requests that memorials be made to CareFirstNY, and invites friends and loved ones to share stories and photos on her memorial page.
Calling Hours for Emily will be held on Thursday, January 8, 2026, from 2:00-4:00 at Haughey Funeral Home, Inc., 216 E. First Street,
