Mrs. Emma "Emmy" Masset of Montague, NJ and a longtime resident of the area died Saturday, July 26, 2025 at home. She was 91.
She was born March 6, 1934 in Musci, Hungary the daughter of the late Joseph Maercz and the late Maria Keidl Maercz.
Emmy married Ernst A. Masset on June 19, 1960 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and they were married for 25 years prior to his passing on April 26, 1986.
She was a very active person in her community over the years. She was a member of St. James the Greater RC Church in Montague, NJ where she also served as President of the Rosary Society. She was the Montague Elementary School PTA President and a Past School Board Member. She was a Montague Township Committee Member and was elected the first Woman Mayor of Montague Township. She was on the Sussex County Planning and Zoning Committee.
Emmy was an accomplished Real Estate Developer for many years and also following the passing of her beloved Ernst she continued his successful company he built, as the President of Westwood Chemical in Middletown, NY.
A family statement read: Never without a smile, mom made people feel special and included – like family. She was a true, loyal friend to many. She loved Montague it was her heaven on earth. Mom mostly loved being with her family her daughters, son-in-law, grandkids, Emily and Garrett, and her Grand-dogs, sweet Lucy, Gracie and baby Ella. Mom was the best. Love you to the moon and back. She is finally in heaven dancing with dad.
Surviving are: Daughter: Doreen A. Masset of Montague, NJ Daughter: Melissa M. Masset of Montague, NJ Daughter: Renee E. Murphy and her husband Gary of Old Greewich, CT Granddaughter: Emily Murphy of Boston, MA Grandson: Garrett Murphy, Jr. of New York City, NY Also several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sister: Dora Gommermann and her husband Andres; her brother-in-law, Arthur Masset and his wife Hatti; her sister-in-law Hildegard Masset and her nephew Norbert Gommermann.
There will be no visitation.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, August 2, 2025 at 10:00am in St. James The Greater R.C. Church, 75 River Road, Montague, NJ with Rev. Wayne Varga officiating.
Burial will be at St. Mary's Cemetery, Port Jervis, NY.
