Erma Baker Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A. - Cumberland on Jul. 15, 2024.
It is with heavy heart that the family of Erma Jean Baker announce her passing on Monday, July 15, 2024, at Peace Healthcare at Lion's Center in Cumberland, MD at the age of 94.
Born December 3, 1929 in Frostburg, she was one of nine children. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 68 years, William (Bill) Baker who passed January 15 of this year, as well as four brothers and four sisters throughout the years.
Jean is survived by her daughter Diane Baker Tucker and husband Gene Tucker of Charlotte, NC.
Jean, as everyone called her, graduated from Girls Central High School in Frostburg, MD in 1947 and was a 1948 graduate of Catholic Central Girls Central Business School in 1948. Her first job was Executive Secretary at Kelly-Springfield and then moved to ABL Hercules as Secretary to the Plant Manager. She also worked as Administrative Assistant for Clopper Oil Company for several years until retirement. Jean was voted Miss Frostburg and first runner-up Miss Maryland in 1948.
She met the love of her life, Bill, at age 25 and they married. He was a confirmed bachelor at 34, but she won his heart. Their first date was at an Elks dance that they still fondly remembered.
Jean was a devout catholic and member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church. Jean taught ceramics classes in the basement of their home for many years, as evidenced by the beautiful pieces all over the house. Jean and Bill enjoyed many nice vacations to Europe (their favorite destination) as well as cruises and trips to Las Vegas, Aruba, etc. They enjoyed cooking together and made so many lavish meals in their house for friends and family.
Jean was a member of the LaVale Century Club and Cumberland Garden Club and enjoyed playing bridge, belonged to several bowling leagues and loved making fresh flower arrangements and decorating the house with plants. She always made birthdays and Christmas so special for everyone, especially family.
Due to her wishes, she will be cremated and buried at Rocky Gap. There will be no services or visitation at this time.
