Eufemia Martinez Carpenter (Effie), 95, native of Sanderson Texas, died peacefully Thursday morning on June 27 in her private nursing home. Her husband Ernest Jimmie Carpenter (former Veteran in the United States Navy) preceded her death in 1985. Her three sisters (Maria, Margaret, Nila), and her brother Frank also preceded her in death (Effie was the third of the four sisters).
Effie retired many years ago from the U.S. Government Civil Service at the Norfolk Naval Station. She was a devout Catholic, and was a member of the Prince Of Peace Catholic Church in Chesapeake for many years. Effie even served as a Eucharist Minister at her church for several years. Everyone who knew Effie always saw her as a resilient, strong, loving, caring and faithful mother, and a friend to everyone she met.
Survivors include her four children (and their spouses), John Roach (Kimberley), Angie McDonough (John), Barbara Jackson (Frank), Richard Roach (Susan); Eight grandchildren, Kimberly Thomas, Jamie Marie Roach, Kaleen Lawsure, Emily Rathbone, Melissa Clark, Sara Jackson, Lauren Kendall, and Amber Tober.
In addition to her children and grandchildren, Effie was blessed with many more great-grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren.
Services will be held at H.D.Oliver Funeral Apartments at 1416 Cedar Road, Chesapeake on Tuesday, July 9th at 11 am. Visitation with family and friends will be from 10 am to 11 am. Graveside service will follow at the Hampton National Cemetery where she will be laid to rest with Ernie.
