Eugene "Gene" Corbett, 86, of Mount Vernon, Illinois, passed away at 10:15 pm July 30, 2023 at White Oak Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in Mount Vernon. He was born August 12, 1936 in Rostraver, Pennsylvania to the late James and Mildred (Hepple) Corbett. Gene married Shirley (Rush) Corbett on June 25, 1952 in Cumberland, Maryland. They just celebrated their 71 year of marriage.
In addition to his beloved wife, Gene is survived by his children, Carol Cook of Mount Vernon, Christine Cross and husband, Robert of Dahlgren, Illinois, Cheryl Oliver and husband, Kevin of Mount Vernon, Paul Corbett and wife, Melissa of Mount Vernon, Tommy Corbett and wife, Kim of Opdyke, Illinois, and Faith Hughey of Mount Vernon; twenty grandchildren; thirty-eight great-grandchildren; eighteen great-great-grandchildren; and siblings, Sarah Garus, Dorothy Lawrence, Paul Corbett, and Teddy Corbett.
In addition to his parents, Gene was preceded in death by his son, David Corbett; two grandchildren; three-great-grandchildren; two sisters; and six brothers.
Gene was a Christian. He pastored a Nazarene church in Carterville. Later, he became a member of First Free Will Baptist Church in Mount Vernon. Gene loved to sing in church, garden, fish, and cook. He had a loving heart and was willing to help anyone in need. Gene will be deeply missed.
A Visitation will be held Wednesday, August 2, 2023 from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm at Hughey Funeral Home in Mount Vernon. A Funeral Service will begin at 1:00 pm with Mr. Jimmy Hughes and Reverend Craig Smith officiating. Inurnment will take place at Ditney Ridge Cemetery in Norris City, Illinois. Memorials may be made in Gene's honor to the First Free Will Baptist Church.
