Eugene Lynn Schroeder, (COACH) 80, of Lewellen, Nebraska, passed away peacefully in his home on February 4, 2026, after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease. Born on December 30, 1945, to Roy and Dorothy Schroeder, Gene was the cherished son and only brother to his sister Deloris (Dee)Schroeder (Stevens). He grew up on the family farm, graduating from Shelton High School in 1963. Gene furthered his education in Denver, completing a technical trade school and earning a teaching degree.
He began his teaching career in Brady, where he met his beloved wife of 53 years, Janet (Hanson) Schroeder, and was blessed with two children, Tyson and Katie (Epp). Taking a break from teaching he purchased the hardware store/ cabinet shop in Brady for few years then he moved his family to Grant, Nebraska where (COACH) as he was known to his students dedicated 25 years to teaching small engines and auto mechanics at Ogallala High School. After his teaching career, he purchased a small farm in Lewellen, where he enjoyed tending to his little cowherd and engaging in farming activities. Gene had a passion for working on his tractor and classic cars, known for his unmatched resourcefulness and ability to fix anything.
Gene is survived by his loving wife, Janet; his children Tyson and wife Kerri (Jehorek), grandson Tyler, Kolbie (Miller), and great-granddaughter Chesney of Ogallala; Katie and her husband Riggin Epp, and grandson Tyin of Lisco; extended family Dale Stevens, Mike Hanson, Tim and Ivy, Hanson, Matt and Jennifer Stevens, Mark and Stacy Stevens, Ben and Vicky Hanson, Joe and Megan Hanson; and his companion dog Sophie.
Gene is remembered for his craftsmanship, dedication to teaching, and the joy he brought to those around him. Now free of pain, he is imagined to be drag racing in the heavens.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
