Our family wants you to know about the incredible man Dr. Gene Shepherd, who passed away July 1, 2025 surrounded by family and in the care of hospice. Gene never met a stranger, turned everything into a compelling story – poignant, educational, humorous, caring -- and loved his family in every way. His kindness and genuine interest in the people he met resulted in many long-term friendships.
He treasured his family so much that he wrote a 100-page book of stories of his life so that his grandchildren would know him when he was gone. The son of Nashvillian "Poppy" Shepherd, a.k.a., the "talking-est man you ever did see." Gene inherited the trait of greeting and speaking to almost every person he saw while walking in the morning or pretty much anywhere.
He was always active and loved tennis as a young man, hiking in national parks and snow skiing. Later in life, golf was his passion, especially when he played with people as competitive as he was. An avid reader of everything from biographies about past presidents to Pulitzer Prize winning novels, he loved to share with us his learning and thoughts about everything from new creatures discovered on the bottom of the ocean to the origins of words.
His humor and wit were quick and appeared throughout his everyday life, causing friends and family to frequently erupt into laughter. The stories he told were from throughout his life and revealed his creativity, his ability to laugh at himself as well as his family. We was a skilled memoirist of his life, sharing stories on the local NPR station WFIT, as well as a gifted quirky sketch artist of animals.
Dr. Eugene M Shepherd, III, known to his friends as Gene and grandkids as Shep, was born in Nashville, Tennessee on May 5, 1947. He attended David Lipscomb in Nashville from preschool to college, later attending medical school at Washington University in St. Louis and completing his residency at the University of Miami (FL) where he became a neurologist. In 1977, Gene and his family moved to Melbourne where he joined Melbourne Neurologic. As a practicing neurologist for more than 35 years, he treated many people with dementia, Alzheimer's, Parkinson's disease, and other illnesses of aging. An excellent mentor, he was proud to be one of the original founders of the Health First Memory Disorder Clinic where he worked with Florida Tech neuro-psychology students for decades, teaching them about brain function and structure, how the brain is affected by memory issues, and what can be learned from MRI's and CT scans. Gene maintained and cherished his friendships with many of his students long after they graduated.
He passionately loved and was beloved by his family, and the many cats that shared his life. Gene is survived by his wife of more than 38 years, Marilyn J. Waters, his sister, Colleen Dixon of Nashville, his three sons, David (Karen), Jon (Tina), and Jesse (Megan), his grandchildren Ben (Thu), Sam (Sapphire), Ella, Sy, Rose and felines Jimmy, Lily and Pinkie.

I had the honor and privilege of being the Licensed Clinical Social Worker at the Memory Disorder Clinic for several years. Dr Shepherd was the Director of the interdisciplinary team. He was filled with medical knowledge and shared that knowledge with wit and compassion. He was a kind and caring person. He had a tremendous impact on my career as a social worker serving our elderly population. RIP Dr Shepherd. Gerda Murphy, LCSW

Blessed to have known Gene over 70 years! We met in his mother's two- year-olds' Sunday School class and, for the most part, grew up together; same school from kindergarten through college. He and I are also blessed with three wonderful sons and couldn't love/have loved them more. He shared love of life, people, travel, books and cats, senses of humor and handsome looks with each of them.

We grew up v-e-r-y conservatively. He wasn't much for dancing, but you should have seen him "cut a rug" the day a gecko ran up his pants' leg! Then, there was the evening during med school in St Louis that we wandered next door to Schnucks-Bettendorf so he could ask a clerk what sort of wine we should buy to serve with scrambled eggs. On and on....

Photos of our sons, Jon, Dave and Jesse. They enjoyed get-away adventures with Gene from childhood on. Recently, they were home regularly and frequently to spend precious time with their dad.

Those of us, both family and friends, who love him will miss him and recall the good times.

I have known Gene for over 45 years. I worked for him when he first came to Melbourne until his retirement. He became my best friend.

I enjoyed morning walks with him and Marilyn in the neighborhood. He would say good morning to everyone. Will miss watching golf and basketball on TV with him. He had a great sense of humor and could always make me laugh.

Gene and Marilyn have been dear friends to the Peake family since our arrival in Brevard from Virginia Beach over 35 years ago.
We enjoyed many dinner and movie nights and many laughs.
Tom and Gene were colleagues and advocates for The Memory Disorder Clinic
since its beginning.
Gene was a tremendous support to my daughters and me after Tom´s diagnosis of early onset Alzheimer´s and we are very grateful.
Gene was a bright, funny, caring and impactful gentleman who is greatly missed. His stories in that charming accent of the characters in his early Nashville days were priceless.

Knowing Gene is an honor. Although our paths crossed only in the last few years, I feel I have known him forever. Wickedly funny, quick to share, he was my best source for reading recommendations. Thank you, Gene, for making the world a better place. To Gene's family, I offer my condolences, your tender care for him at the end of his life is a model of love and compassion.

As the days and weeks pass, and as you return to life's routine, may you continue to feel comforted by the love and support of family and friends.

Dad was quick to laugh, joked frequently and enjoyed life. Here´s a picture while we´re waiting for the subway in NYC in 2015. This picture of his laughing surprised me because waiting was extremely low on his enjoyment list. I would have anticipated this picture would have shown him disheveled after my stopping him from jumping on the tracks during our wait.
