Eugene "Gene" Siefer
LEIPSIC – Eugene "Gene" Siefer, 93, of Leipsic, passed away on May 7, 2025 surrounded by his family. He was born on March 19, 1932, in Ottawa to the late Francis T. and Josephine (Ricker) Siefer. He lived a life of love, hard work, adventure and family. One of his sayings was "The Good Lord puts you here to do a job and he will take you once it's complete." Gene, you did a great job!
Gene graduated from Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic School in 1950 where he played in the band and was on a winning basketball team. After school, he went straight into his lifetime career in refrigeration at GTE/Sylvania/Philips retiring after 40 years in 1989, making him a member of the Quarter Century Club. Gene married Lois Schmitt on May 9, 1951 and they resided in Ottawa until 1960 when they moved to Leipsic after purchasing the family farm. Together they had several family businesses including the coin laundries in Deshler and McComb. He loved farming, planting and gardening (especially raspberries!), vacationing or wintering in Florida for over 35 years and traveling across the country seeing the sights, watching NASCAR and his favorite racers (Bill Elliot and Chase Elliot), drinking his "mix" at "beer-thirty" daily, eating a "sizzle steak" from Tony's (no onion!), tinkering in the Shop, and he enjoyed being at every family gathering/event he could. He really looked forward to attending high school reunions each year. Gene loved listening to music and loved Mollie B polka! He was a member of Leipsic St. Mary's Catholic Church.
Gene loved spending most of his time with his immediate and extended family and would often grab a deck of cards to begin a game of Euchre, Rummy or Solitaire. He always had great stories to share and was kind and gentle yet known for giving his honest opinion when asked. He would do anything for his family and was always sharing his wisdom with his children and others on car maintenance, working the ground and planting, maintaining and harvesting crops. He was very knowledgeable about trains and cars and helped his children select cars and worked on them in the Shop. He supported his children by attending their sporting events and playing ball in the front yard at family events. Gene was a wonderful human and will be missed by the many people whose lives he touched.
Gene is preceded in death by his mother and father, wife Lois, sons: Mike, Bill, Jim and Joe, daughter Ginny, and brother Tom.
Gene is survived by his sons: Terry (Jan) Siefer, Gerald (Grace) Siefer, Bob (Deb) Siefer; daughters: Patti (Jim) Wilcox and Tonia (Scott) Campbell; 26 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren; sister Juanita Alt; sister-in-law Dorothy Siefer; and extended family and friends.
Funeral Mass will begin at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 10, 2025, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Leipsic with Fr. Randy Giesige officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. on Friday, May 9, 2025, and 8 to 8:45 a.m. on Saturday at LOVE-HEITMEYER FUNERAL HOME, 226 N. Belmore St., Leipsic
