Eugene F. Smith, 92, passed sweetly into the arms of his Savior on August 1, 2023.
Fondly known by all as Smitty, he was born on August 5, 1930 in the town of New Garden, Ohio to parents, Emmett and Nettie Smith.
Smitty met the love of his life, Barbara, and married her on August 7, 1954. He loved her dearly as they shared nearly 69 wonderful years together.
Smitty loved his family and the Lord. He was a dedicated member of 2nd United Methodist Church in Millville, NJ, where he served as Sunday School teacher, Lay Leader, Church Bus Driver and Chicken Pot Pie chef.
In 1993, Smitty and Barbara retired in Northport, FL ("2nd Methodist South") where they enjoyed 13 years together with longtime Millville friends and new Florida friends, as members of Christ United Methodist Church, in Venice, FL.
Smitty and Barbara also enjoyed living in Jackson, MS working with Wesley Biblical Seminary, before returning to Medford, NJ. He was then a 15 year member of Sharptown United Methodist, where he loved attending in his later years as he was able.
Smitty was a Navy Veteran. He served from 1950-54 where he was a 2nd class petty officer and gunman on the USS Albuquerque during the Korean Conflict.
Many Millville friends remember Smitty warmly as their favorite milkman, delivering from Shoemaker Dairies, where he then worked as manager. He retired as a small business owner of EF Smith Trucking.
Smitty is survived by: wife, Barbara; four children: Donna Garrison (Ronald), Ronald Smith (Dorena), Doug Smith (Julie) and Deb Ciapanna; Six grandchildren: Kristin Robinson (Emily), Michael Robinson (Courtney), Katherine Grabau (Jonathan), Joseph Ciapanna Jr., Laura Wood( Frank) and Thomas Smith; Four great grandchildren: Harper Anne Smith Speranza, Lulu Joan Robinson, James Daniel Grabau, and Haley Jane Wood. He also is survived by one sister, Violet Woodall, and many nieces, nephews and extended family.
Smitty joins his parents, four brothers, six sisters, and two grandsons, Andrew James Smith and David Gipson Smith in heaven.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Monday, August 7, 2023 at Sharptown United Methodist Church, 3 Chapel Street, Pilesgrove, NJ 08098. There will be a memorial visitation at the church starting at 10 AM leading to the memorial service with military honors at 11 AM. Burial will be private.
In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be made in memory of Eugene F. Smith to the Ohio Christian University, 1476 Lancaster Pike, Circleville, OH 43113 or to the Sharptown United Methodist Church by mailing to 24 Church Street, Pilesgrove, NJ 08098. www.adamsfuneralhome.org
