Eugene Leroy Smith, age 79, of Murray, Utah, passed away peacefully on January 13, 2026, in Murray.
Born on October 26, 1946, in Murray, Eugene grew up in the Rose Park neighborhood of Salt Lake City. He graduated from West High School in 1964 and, just three days later, married the love of his life, Margaret Ann Talbot. Together, they built a life filled with family, hard work, and shared passions, celebrating over 61 years together.
Eugene began his career with Chicago Bridge and Iron before dedicating decades of skilled service to Utah Power & Light as a plant mechanic. He retired from UP&L after 35 years. All who knew him called him Smitty.
Eugene enjoyed hunting, fishing, and collecting classic cars, amassing an impressive collection which was often seen lined up outside the house during ritual Saturday morning car washing. Mom and Dad were regulars at every car show and cruise in town until a new passion took over. In 2008, he built a family cabin that remains a treasured gathering place where loved ones continue to make memories. The cabin was Mom and Dad's happy place, where they would take drives to watch animals and spend time with their dogs, Bear and Lola. They were at the cabin most of the summer, only coming home to check the mail and water the lawn. He was known throughout his family as the go-to person for car repair. He generously helped anyone with any task, no matter how big or small.
Eugene is survived by his wife, Margaret Ann; their children, Paul (Stephanie), Thomas (Darlene), Rebecca (Scott), and Mark (Terri); Sister Marcella Sparks (Steven Webb); 17 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren. He is preceded by Great Grand Daughters Madelyn Ivy Smith and Lucy Pearl Smith.
He will be deeply missed by all who knew him for his kindness, skill, and unwavering devotion.
