Evan "Stumpie" Bice

Evan "Stumpie" Bice, 81, of Bridgeport, passed away Friday, December 12, 2025, at United Hospital Center following an extended illness. He was born in Clarksburg, WV on May 27, 1944, the only child of the late Claire Evan Bice and Justine Stump Bice.

He is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Nancy Gum Bice, whom he married on June 7, 1970. Also surviving are his daughter, Heather Bice Randolph, and her husband, Mark and his grandson, Tyler Evan Randolph. He leaves behind several cousins, cherished friends, and his special caregiver, Nikki Cottrill.

Stumpie was a graduate of Washington Irving High School, Class of 1962. He later graduated from The Southern School of Printing in Nashville, TN and from Salem College in Salem, WV. He retired from Consolidated Natural Gas after 32 years of service, during which time he served his fellow employees as a union director. Following his retirement, Stumpie continued to share his innate ability to comfort and bring joy to those in need, as he worked an additional 12 years in the funeral industry in Harrison County.

He was a member of Simpson Creek Baptist Church and the Clarksburg Lions Club. Stumpie dedicated countless hours of services as the Lions Club's Sight and Hearing Coordinator. In recognition of his service, he was honored with the Leonard Jarrett Award, the Melvin Jones Fellow, and the Evan Hugus Award.

Stumpie was known for his lively spirit and sense of humor that brightened any room. Though he was often ornery, it was part of what made him so beloved – his candid nature and quick wit were as endearing as they were unforgettable.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his honor to the Harrison County Heart Association or the WVU Eye Institute.

Friends will be received at Burnside Funeral Home, 607 S. Virginia Avenue, Bridgeport, on Friday from 3 – 7 p.m., where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, December 20, 2025, with Reverend Dr. Sean Wegener presiding. Interment will follow in Bridgeport Cemetery.
