Evelyn C. Polke

Evelyn Cheek Polke of Cordele passed away Saturday, November 4, 2023, at Blackshear Villa at the age of 99. She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl Polke; her parents, Andrew and Trilla Burgess Cheek; siblings, Kathleen (Warren) Coleman, Harold (Carolyn) Cheek, Martelle (Jimmy) Royal and Rdelia (Hubert) Smith. Born in Milan, she retired from the Customer Service Department with Bell South with 40 plus years of service. She was an active member of Pinecrest Baptist Church and was involved over the years in many church ministries, one being to help restore Camp Houston through the Houston Baptist Association. Whenever there was a need she was there to be the Lord's hands and feet. She and her husband, Earl, helped plant two churches in the area, Northern Heights Baptist and Morningside Baptist. Her greatest love though was her grandchildren, whether it be cooking, sitting or just enjoying being a grandmother. One of her favorite activities was square dancing with the local group. Evelyn is survived by two daughters and their husbands, Garnie and Steve Mitchell and Charissa and Tom Carter, all of Cordele; four grandchildren Amanda M. (Jason) Personette of Roswell, Stephen (Carla) Mitchell of Pendergrass, Laura Leigh (Johnathon) Tillman of San Francisco, CA and John Thomas (Lauren) Carter, Jr. of Marietta; and four great-grandchildren, Collette Personette, Piper Personette, Bowen Michell and Emma Rae Mitchell, and one other little Carter blessing on the way. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, November 8, 2023 at Pinecrest Baptist Church. Evelyn will be laid to rest at Evergreen Memorial Gardens.The family will receive friends prior to the service Wednesday beginning at 1:00 p.m.. They would like to say thank you to KJ and A Caregivers, Blackshear Villas and Reflections Hospice for all the love and care that was given to Evelyn during her time of need.
