Ezra “Ez” Gay Halterman, age 88, husband of Dorothy “Dottie” (Hiner) Halterman of Monterey, passed away Sunday, November 16, 2025 at his home.
Born on September 15, 1937 in Monterey, he was a son of the late Albert Mercer and Effie Annice (Key) Halterman. Ez retired from Mead Westvaco, as an equipment operator, after 28 years of service.
A devout Christian, Ez was a member of the Church of God, who enjoyed time spent reading his Bible and playing piano for the church. Additionally, Ez truly found joy being outside in nature. During the Summer, he would walk up on the ridges behind his home to pick blackberries, and could be found working in his garden, or cutting firewood. He also enjoyed riding his scooter or bike to town, or sitting in Monterey (in his truck) with his wife and dog visiting with friends and acquaintances. In recent years, he appreciated simply sitting on his front porch listening to the birds and being as close to nature as possible.
In addition to his parents, predeceased family members include a son, Eddie Halterman; his brothers, Clark and Paul Halterman; and his sisters, Ruth Weaver and Mary Smith.
Surviving family members include his beloved wife of 65 years; a son, Danny G. Halterman and wife, Barbara of Greensboro, NC; and nephews, Elmer and Glen Halterman, both of Monterey.
A funeral service will be held 1 p.m. on Wednesday, November 19, 2025 at Obaugh Funeral Home with Pastor William “Andy” Botkin officiating. Interment will follow in Monterey Cemetery.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
Friends attending the service will serve as active pallbearers.
The family would like to thank the Botkin family, Moyers family, Vinson family, and ACG Hospice for the wonderful care he received during his illness.
Memorial contributions may be made to Highland County Volunteer Rescue Squad, PO Box 268 OR the Highland County Volunteer Fire Department, PO Box 267, Monterey, VA 24465.
