F. John "Jack" Herrington Jr.

Bloomfield – F. John "Jack" Herrington, Jr., age 94, passed away peacefully on January 30, 2024. He is survived by three children, Dennis A. (Deanna) Herrington, Pamela Herrington (Wayne Palmer) and Nancy (Patrick) Long; four grandchildren, Courtney (Steve) Kazmark, Kimberly Herrington (Zebulon Clarke), Amanda Palmer, and Victor Long; three great-grandchildren, Finnley, Kallen and Brycen. He was predeceased by his wife, Joan E. Herrington in 2018.
Jack was born in Pittsburgh, PA and was the son of Fox John and Lyda (Sanner) Herrington. He was a graduate of Peabody High School in Pittsburgh, class of 1948. Jack earned a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from Carnegie Tech, class of 1952. He worked at General Motors in Detroit as an automotive engineer through the 1950's. In 1960, Jack joined Kordite, a plastics manufacturer in Macedon. It later became Mobil Chemical. He retired from Mobil Chemical in 1992 after 32 years there. Later that year, Jack established Proteus, Inc., a company specializing in rapid prototyping of new products. The technology has since become known as 3D printing.
Jack is listed as the engineer on 103 patents. Among his involvement in other well-known consumer products, his most widely used invention is the slider closure of Hefty One Zip, now seen universally on plastic bags.
Jack and Joan enjoyed being near the water and owned a cottage in the Thousand Islands from 1984 to 1999. Later that year, they sold the cottage in the Thousand Islands and bought a cottage on Keuka Lake, which they owned until 2010. He was a commissioner of the East Bloomfield Fire District from 2008 to 2014. Jack enjoyed real estate investing and improving, woodworking and was a member of the Bloomfield Scientific Club.
Friends may call Sunday, February 18, from 1-3 pm, at Johnson-Kennedy Funeral Home, Inc., 2 South Ave., Bloomfield. His memorial service will immediately follow the visitation, at the funeral home. Interment will be in East Bloomfield Cemetery at a later date.
