Faye Dell Monroe, 94, of Amarillo, passed away Tuesday, January 23, 2024. She was born on June 24, 1929, in Amarillo, to Fate and Luella Dool. She grew up on a ranch near Grady, New Mexico, graduating from Grady High School, where she excelled in basketball. She also had a lifelong love of riding horses. She took up basketball again later in life, earning medals in the Senior Olympics. Faye Dell was an avid bowler, playing on many teams over the years. She even enjoyed bowling on the Wii after her actual bowling ball became too heavy for her. Faye Dell loved needlework, creating many beautiful pieces of embroidery as gifts to family and friends. She also loved jigsaw puzzles and would hide a piece from everyone so she could always put in the last one.
Faye Dell was always a career woman, even before it became commonplace for women. In Amarillo, she worked for Amarillo Hardware, Saint Anthony's Hospital in the personnel department, and finally for First Baptist Church of Amarillo, where she has been a member for many years. After officially retiring, she had a small business of her own that kept her busy. She was never one to sit still for too long.
Faye Dell often mentioned that, as an only child, she didn't have much family and so she was very proud of all her family members. She is survived by her only child, son Cameron Monroe and wife Patty, of Amarillo. One of her greatest joys was being "Gran" to grandson Matthew and wife Laurie, and grandson Joshua, even if it meant admitting she was old enough to be a grandmother. She is also survived by her three great-grandchildren, James, Kaylee, and Anna.
The family would like to express deep gratitude for the many staff members who have helped care for Faye Dell in recent years. The wonderful people at The Moore and The Sycamore at Park Central, and at Hillside Heights Rehabilitation Suites, all made her final years as comfortable as they could be. The family is especially grateful to Ruby of the Jan Werner Center, who oversaw Faye Dell's care for the last nine years of her life. Ruby, your work, care, and devotion were critical to our family and to Faye Dell herself; we would have been lost without you. Thank you.
A visitation has been scheduled for Friday, January 26, 2024, from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m., at Redeemer Christian Church, 3701 Soncy Road in Amarillo.
