Fernando Matro

Fernando Ramos Matro (90), of Chicago, Illinois, passed away on June 6, 2023, surrounded by friends and family. Fernando, fondly known as Nanding or Fando, was born to Nestor and Felisa, on September 11, 1932, in Cotabato, Philippines. Nanding was a talented basketball player and played for De La Salle University in the Philippines. While in college, he was the business manager of their school's newsletter called "La Sallites". Soon after graduating college with Bachelors of Science in Commerce, he moved to the United States and eventually found a career in the Federal Government. Nanding retired from the Federal Government in 2006.
Nanding is survived by his wife of 53 years, Andrea and his two children; Ferdinand and his wife Rita; and Audrey and her husband Frank with their three children Jacob, Caleb, and Katelyn. He is also survived by his four sisters Violeta Antelman (Pittsburgh, PA), Celia Caampued (Los Angeles, CA), Yolanda Matro (Glasgow, Scotland), and Teresita Stonefield (Myrtle Beach, SC).
Aside from his love for basketball, Nanding loved music. If he wasn't watching a game, he was listening to his favorites from Frank Sinatra. Nanding was a devout Catholic. He would often entertain online debates with anyone challenging his faith. Nanding was also an active member of the Fatima Prayer Community for over 35 years.
Nanding, also known as Lolo to his grandchildren, helped raise them. He was there at every milestone. He even watched the kids play his favorite game of basketball. The youngest grandchild adopted Lolo's taste in music. More importantly, Lolo exemplified his strong devotion to the Catholic faith giving his grandchildren a role model to emulate. This is his legacy.
Nanding was loved by those who knew him for he loved everyone unconditionally. He offered forgiveness before asking. He extended his hand for those who were in need. Nanding is the epitome of a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend. He will be missed but will forever live in our hearts.
Nanding's family will host a wake on Thursday, June 15, and Friday, June 16, from 3 pm to 8 pm at Smith Corcoran Funeral Home on 6150 N. Cicero. The funeral service will be held on Saturday, June 17, at 11 am at St Benedict Church on 2215 W. Irving Park Road. The burial following the funeral service will be at St. Boniface Cemetery at 4901 N Clark Street.
