Florian "Lefty" Keller, 91, of Jackson, NJ
With profound sadness that we announce the passing of Florian "Lefty" Keller, beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, esteemed coach, and devoted educator. Lefty passed away peacefully at his cherished home on Wednesday, August 14, 2024, surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Elizabeth, New Jersey, to Frank and Rose, Florian Frank Keller, affectionately known to many as "Lefty," led a life defined by his passion for sports, education, and family. Earning a scholarship to Seton Hall Prep, where he became a standout basketball player, leading the AA Division in scoring, and also excelled as a pitcher for the Linden Lumber team. In 1955, Lefty earned his Bachelor of Science in Physical Education, then enlisted in the Navy. He earned his Master of Education from Rutgers in 1962.
Lefty dedicated his professional career to the Jackson School District for 37 years. As the first physical education teacher and basketball coach at Jackson Memorial High School, he led the school to its first-ever basketball championship, setting the foundation for future successes. His coaching prowess extended beyond the basketball court, leading the soccer team to victory in the Shore Conference Championship in 1966, and earning the title of Coach of the Year in 1972.
Beyond his athletic achievements, Lefty was a passionate educator who cared deeply about the well-being of his students. He was instrumental in shaping Jackson's summer recreation program.
A devoted family man, Lefty took immense pride in his role as "Pop" to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His presence in their lives was a source of strength, love, and guidance.
Lefty is predeceased by his parents, Rose and Frank, and his wife, Mary "Marie" Keller. He is survived by his eight children: Rob (wife Robin), Jean (husband Robert), Jackie (husband David), Ron (wife Jacquelyn), Rick (wife Marisa), Kevin (wife Kerri), Zach, and Kate, along with his 15 cherished grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. He is lovingly remembered by his former wife Cathy Keller.
