CUMBERLAND – Floyd "Junior" Nelson Umstot, Jr., 87, of McMullen Hwy, passed away on Friday, August 29, 2025 at his home with loving family by his side.
Born October 13, 1937, in Keyser, WV, he was the son of the late Alma (Staggs) and Floyd Nelson Umstot, Sr. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his parents-in-law, Harmon and Nellie (Grabenstein) Barton; a son, David Nelson Umstot; brothers, Harold Umstot (Gerri) and James Umstot; sisters, Marion Cresap (George) and Carol Price (Bill); sisters-in-law, Rhoda Barton and Joan McDonald (Jim), and nephews, Charles and Jimmy Barton. Floyd was the last surviving member of his family.
Floyd was a 1955 graduate of Fort Ashby School and his best friend was Bobby Joe Westfall. His first job was working at Barton's Dairy, where he met the love of his life, Helen Jean Barton. They married on November 22, 1958 and raised five children together.
Floyd went to work at the Kelly Springfield Tire Company for twenty-six years until the plant closed. He then went on to work at the Maryland State Highway Administration and later Walter Yoder and Sons. Mr. Umstot was a member of Saint Ambrose Catholic Church and the NRA.
After his retirement, Floyd enjoyed doing crossword puzzles, gardening, hunting with his sons, and especially keeping a perfectly mowed lawn. He loved working on things in his shed and was a hard worker. Most of all though, he loved spending time with his family.
Floyd is survived by his loving wife of sixty-seven years, Helen Jean (Barton) Umstot; daughter, Diane Dawson (Bob); sons, Douglas Umstot (Nadine), Donnie Umstot (Diana), and Dale Umstot (Shelly); daughter-in-law, Vonda Umstot; brother-in-law, Eddie Barton, and his sister-in-law, Joyce Umstot.
He leaves behind his grandchildren, Scott Lowery (Laura), David Umstot (Alex), Nicole Schoenadel (Jake), Dylan Umstot (Alyssa), Katie Bosley (Josh), Jared Umstot, Sean Umstot (Erika), Derek Umstot, Tyler Chase, and Shirley Ortiz; great-grandchildren, Clayton Lindner, Braydon Lowery, Karika and Dakota Umstot, Caleb and Coleton Schoenadel, Declan and Sydney Bosley, Riley and Taylor Umstot, and their little brother on the way; and a large extended family including many nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 15205 McMullen Highway, Cresaptown on Wednesday, September 3, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m..
Visitation will continue at the funeral home Thursday, September 4 from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. and a funeral service will begin at 11:00 a.m. with Deacon Ryan Schmeltzer officiating.
Private interment will follow in St. Ambrose Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, contributions are asked to be directed to the Cresaptown Fire Vol Dept, 13113 Warrior Dr, Cumberland, MD 21502 or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude’s Place, Memphis, TN 38105, (https://www.stjude.org/donate/donate-to-st-jude.html) in honor of Floyd.
The family would like to thank the staff of Home Care, Hospice, Rehab and Hospital (especially the 5th floor) of UPMC Western Maryland, Dr. Terry Harvey, Jen, and staff, Alex Umstot, Tina Haller, Shelly Umstot, and Arreon Paige for their exceptional care. His children would like to especially thank their mother Jean for her unwavering love and care of their father.
Pallbearers will be his grandsons Scott Lowery, Dave, Dylan, Jared, Sean, and Derek Umstot.
