LaVale, MD- James "Ed" Edward Phillips, 87, of LaVale, MD, went to Heaven on Sunday, October 5, 2025 at WVU-Ruby Memorial Hospital.
Born July 26, 1938 in Meyersdale, PA, Mr. Phillips was the son of the late Joseph Bruce Phillips and Margaret Leola (Kretchman) Phillips. He was also preceded in death by his wife: Carol (Purbaugh) Phillips; his brothers: Joseph and John Phillips; and was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
A graduate of PennTech, Ed retired from Sears with 40 years of service as an appliance repair technician. He and his wife, Carol were snow birds in South Daytona for 28 years. He was a great man who would be able to fix anything whether it was a washer, lawn mower, or an AC unit. He completed a 1929 Mercedes Gazelle kit and throughout the years attended numerous parades and shows. He loved his life and family and his favorite past time was riding his motorcycle as often as possible, riding at the age of 87.
Ed is survived by his children: Sue MacGray and husband Steve; James "Ed" E. Phillips, Jr. and wife Abilene; Diane Phillips-Chitwood and husband Daniel; and Sally Benson and husband David; 9 grandchildren: Sheri Orndorff (Brian); Aaron MacGray (Lizzie); Kara Bowen (Gordon); Brad Phillips (Becky); Tyler Shell (Cera); Tim Shell (Kristan); Megan Fordham (Ryan); Mary Beth Simpson (Max); and Matthew Benson (Kailee); and 20 great-grandchildren.
Friend will be received at Adams Family Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur Street, Cumberland, MD on Friday, October 10, 2025 from 11:00 A.M. to 12:00 P.M. A memorial service will begin at 12:00 P.M. with Pastor Matt Eichhorn officiating.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made in his name to Eckhart Baptist Church, 17104 Old National Pike, SW, Frostburg, MD 21532.
