Frances Archer Campbell
1939 – 2026
Frances Archer Campbell, a lifelong educator, master quilter, and a woman of fierce independence, passed away on February 27, 2026, at the age of 86. A cornerstone of the Las Cruces community, Frances lived life entirely on her own terms, defined by her sharp intellect, her determination to serve, and a deep-seated pride in the family she built.
Born in 1939 in the Mesilla Valley, Frances was the daughter of the late Albert Edward Archer (A.E. Archer of Mesilla Park) and Vera Ophelia Archer (née Sutherlin). Her roots were deeply planted in the soil of the valley; she was born and raised on her family's pecan farm, a heritage that would define her work ethic and her connection to the land for the rest of her life.
A Legacy of the Land and Leadership
Frances did not just inherit a legacy; she carried it forward. She raised her own children on a pecan farm, ensuring they understood the value of hard work and the rhythm of the seasons. Remarkably, even while she was shaping young minds as a full-time educator and raising her large family, Frances personally ran the operations of the pecan farm. Her commitment to the valley's agricultural community was absolute; during her time farming, she volunteered as a representative for the Elephant Butte Irrigation District, serving as a steadfast voice for the small farmers across the Mesilla Valley. She was as comfortable advocating for water rights as she was managing a classroom, embodying a tireless spirit that refused to be confined to a single path.
A Career of Impact
As an educator, Frances was formidable. Her professional career spanned over 30 years in the classroom, with 25 years spent shaping elementary students in Las Cruces followed by five years in El Paso. She didn't just teach; she led. In 1994, her dedication to the profession was recognized with a prestigious National Teacher of the Year award, a testament to her excellence and the high standard she set for education in New Mexico.
From a Single Spark to a Regional Network
Frances' "second act" as a master quilter was not just a hobby, but a vehicle for community empowerment. It began simply: Frances offered her services to an after-school program to teach children how to sew. That single classroom blossomed into a sprawling network of adult sewing and quilting education. What started at one community center many years ago expanded under her leadership to over six community centers across Southern New Mexico and West Texas. Known as the "Queen Bee" of the "Will Work for Fabric" bee and a leader in the Las Colcheras Quilt Guild, she famously petitioned the Gadsden School System for bus routes and negotiated with the Farmers Market board to ensure the guild's presence. Her relentless work earned her a formal Certificate of Appreciation from the Doña Ana County Board of Commissioners in 2025.
A Family Built on Pride
Frances' greatest project was her family. She took immense pride in her six children and watched with a keen eye as her legacy grew to include 18 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. Her love was tangible and hardworking; she meticulously crafted a unique quilt for every grandchild's high school graduation and marriage, and ensured each of her 22 great-grandchildren received a hand-made baby quilt. These quilts remain as enduring symbols of her presence-ordered, beautiful, and made to last.
She is preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Barbara Archer (d. 1952); and her son, Randy Campbell (d. 1999).
She is survived by her children: Vicki Glaze; Rick Campbell and his wife, Mona; Lauri Lucero; Debbie Foreman and her husband, Brad; and Robert Campbell and his wife, Tracie. She also leaves behind her 18 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, and a community of "quilting sisters" who carry forward her legacy of service.
