Frances Kay Kahler, fondly known as Kay to her family and friends, passed away at the San Luis Care Center in Alamosa, Colorado on May 13, 2025. Born on December 17, 1941, in Medford, Oregon to Reuben Gillespie and Frances Dunn, Kay's vibrant spirit and unwavering kindness marked nearly 84 years of a life well lived.
Kay completed her Bachelor of Science degree at Adams State College. She chose a career in healthcare as a Radiologic Technologist, a role in which she excelled for many years. Her adeptness in her profession was as evident as her ability to adapt to the ever-changing technology and demands of the healthcare system.
A dedicated member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Kay's faith was an intrinsic part of her life. Her commitment to her faith led her to fulfill a mission with her sister in Poland, which added to the richness of her experiences and service. Her civic engagement was a testament to her beliefs as she served as the President of the local Republican Party, influencing her community with her strong and fair leadership.
Beyond her professional and spiritual life, Kay was an avid golfer, an enthusiast traveler, and a culinary explorer. Her golf clubs were her constant companions on her journeys, seeking out new courses in her travels. Kay's love of travel was matched by her adventurous palate; trying new foods was always a highlight of her trips. Back at home, her own cooking was celebrated by her family, a testament to the love and care she put into every meal.
Kay's devotion to her family was her greatest pride. She was a cherished mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother whose guidance and affection were the heart of the family. Survived by her children, Scott (Shannon) Hensley, Mark (Stephanie) Hensley, Lynn (Liz) Hensley, Gregory Hensley, Justin (Michelle) Hensley, and Julia (Shodi) Hensley, along with eighteen grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren, Kay's nurturing presence will be deeply missed. She is preceded in death by her parents, and her son Ronald Lee Hensley.
In her leisure, she could often be found sewing, creating beautiful pieces for her loved ones, or enjoying the tranquility of the family ranch. Kay lived her life as an embodiment of love, kindness, and faith. She navigated the world with grace, touching the lives of many, whether it was through her work, her volunteering, or simply by being a steadfast presence for her family and friends.
A visitation will be held for friends and family from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Thursday, May 22, 2024 at the Rogers Family Mortuary in Alamosa. A Funeral Service will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday, May 23, 2025 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 300 Richardson Avenue, in Alamosa. Burial will follow services in the Speiser Cemetery near Mosca.
