Francis A. Conroy, 89, of Sellersburg, passed away peacefully in his sleep Saturday, May 3, 2025 at Baptist Health Floyd Hospital in New Albany. He was born February 21, 1936, in Henryville, Indiana to the late Joseph and Mary Conroy.
Francis graduated from Henryville High School in 1954 and received his Bachelor of Chemical Engineering degree from Purdue University in 1958. After college, he joined Louisville Cement Company (now known as Heidelberg Materials) where he had a long successful career until his retirement in 1992 as Plant Manager of the Speed Cement Plant & Terminal in Speed, Indiana. In retirement, Francis was very active in the St. Paul church community and serving on the Parish Council and Finance Committees. He was also instrumental in coordinating construction for the remodeling of St. Paul, additions to the school and the construction of the new St John Paul church. For nearly 20 years Francis volunteered and dedicated time to the Metro United Way, including serving as President.
He was on the Board of North Clark Hospital, Sellersburg Zoning Board and Planning Commission. He won numerous awards and leadership recognition throughout his retirement years, including Metro United Way Campaign Chairman Service Award 1995-1996, Advisory Award 1994, St. John Paul Volunteer of the Year 2009. He was also on the board of directors for Greater North Clark Health Foundation and was a charter member of the Sellersburg Celebrates festival. Francis also served as treasurer of Art in Speed Park.
Francis is survived by his beloved wife of nearly 64 years, Mary; daughter Michelle (Mike) Layland of Brentwood, Tennessee; sons, Mark (Tracy) Conroy of Evansville, Indiana, Robert (Tami) Conroy of Prospect, Kentucky, Dale (Dawn) Conroy of Bloomington, Illinois, Doug (Julie) Conroy of San Antonio, Texas; grandchildren, Spencer, Taylor, Zachary, Jackson, Katie, Kassie, Kourtney, Brandon, Caroline, Kylie, Kendra, Evan, and Zoe; eight great-grandchildren; and sisters, Sue Howard, Katy Conroy, and Irene Carlow, along with numerous nephews and nieces.
In addition to his parents, Francis was preceded in death by his sisters, Shirley Ann Dempsey and Mary Margaret Anderson, and Brothers Earl Conroy, Jerry Conroy and John Conroy.
A funeral mass will be held at 1:30 P.M. on Saturday, May 10, 2025 at St. John Paul II Catholic Church (2253 W. St. Joe Road,
Sellersburg, Indiana 47172) with interment to follow at St. Joe Hill Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Friday from 4:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. at the Garr Funeral Home (7806 Highway 311,
Sellersburg, Indiana 47172) and on Saturday at the funeral home from 11:00 A.M. until the time of the procession to the church. Memorial contributions can be made to St. John Paul II Catholic Church.
