Francis Mankei Tam, 86, of Frostburg, Maryland, passed away on June 21, 2025 peacefully at home. Francis was born on December 7, 1938, in Portuguese Macau, China, to the late Agatha (Yeung) and Anthony Wai Chiu Tam.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 46 years, Margaret (McGann); one daughter, Dr. Mary Tam and husband, Dr. Brent Cunningham of Harrisonburg, VA; son, Dr. Peter Tam of Richmond, VA; son, Matthew Tam and partner, Ruth Carden, of Portland, OR; four grandchildren, Vincent and Isaac Cunningham and Noah and Kylie Tam; and daughter-in-law, Kristin Tam. He is also survived by two sisters, Sr. Eucharista Tam, of Hong Kong and Margaret (Alan) Wong, of Canada; and one brother, Dr. Simon Tam (Elizabeth), of Yonkers, NY. Additionally, he is survived by his sister-in-law, Sr. Iris Marie McGann; his brothers-in-law, Joseph (Lois) McGann and James (Maureen) McGann; and many special nieces and nephews, including Colleen Heinrich, Paige McGann and Meredith Baker.
Francis was a 1959 graduate of the University of Hong Kong. In 1960, Francis came to the United States to continue his education at the University of California, Berkeley, where he graduated in 1963 with a degree in physics. He then moved to the University of Minnesota where he earned his masters degree in physics. In 1967, Francis began his 41-year tenure teaching in the physics department at Frostburg State University, which sponsored his US citizenship that he was granted in 1971. During Francis' time at FSU, he proudly invested in the education of university students, but also the community at large. He was well known for performing his 'science demos' for local groups and schools where he would famously have concrete bricks smashed on his stomach while lying on a bed of nails. He was approved to the rank of Professor in 2004, and later gained Emeritus status.
In addition, Francis was the project director of the ITQ/TOPPS (Improving Teacher Quality Through Training Opportunities in Physics and Physical Science) program. He also served as the secretary and treasurer for the Appalachian section of the AAPT (American Association of Physics Teachers). In 1991, he earned an AAPT Distinguished Service Award, and in 2016 he was named an AAPT Fellow, a career highlight.
Francis was an avid Albert Einstein fan. He researched and published an insightful article about the scientist's visit to Western Maryland. Given his education background in meteorology, he particularly enjoyed thunderstorm electrification, snowrollers, and the prediction of storms and weather patterns impacting our Maryland mountains. Francis was also an enthusiastic keyboard player at Keyboard World and a longtime member of Divine Mercy Parish at St. Michael's.
Family and friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Avenue, Cumberland, on Wednesday, June 25th from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m., with a Christian Wake service beginning at 7:00 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Michael's Catholic Church, 44 East Main Street, Frostburg, on Thursday, June 26th at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Cumberland.
Francis would be honored that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to the FSU Foundation Accounts #40116 (Anthony Wai Chiu Tam Science Achievement Award) or #48083 (Tam Student Science Research Award) or donations to St. Michael's Catholic Church, 44 East Main Street, Frostburg, MD 21532.

My memory of Professor Tam draws on an experience in his class that Pamela Dennison Ajluni captures better than I do. I don't think I missed a single lecture class, because he made learning fun and rewarding.

I was so lucky to have Professor Tam as my "Contemporary Topics in Physics" teacher at Frostburg in the Spring 1973 semester. His enthusiasm for the topic, and his great personal energy, sparked a lifelong interest in science in this otherwise non-science/non-math student. A special thrill for me was having Dr. Tam be the grand opening tour guide in Compton Hall for me and my wife and grandkids when we attended Homecoming that year! I will always remember so fondly, and be inspired by, Dr. Tam. I am sending my gratitude into the universe for Dr. Tam, and my sincerest condolences to his family and loved ones. I hope sweet memories will soon replace at least some of your loss. Henry Smith, FSC '75

I recall Mr. Tam's meteorology classes at Frostburg State and remember his kind nature. Although seemingly very serious, he occasionally would make a joke. Usually, a brief pause followed, then a chuckle or two from the brightest students, followed by more chuckles from the rest of the class, and then Mr. Tam would laugh, too. Such a fond memory of a remarkable man who touched so many lives! My deepest condolences to his family and friends.
